Message 1313016 - Posted: 9 Dec 2012, 13:11:15 UTC

Greetings fellow SETIzens,

This topic may well be off topic for these fora, but under the circumstances (the project has no forum of their own), I was hoping to get some info here.

I recently built an i7 3770 PC for my other half. She is, of course, running SETI. She also attached to FreeHAL. Upon running it, we saw that she had 8 SETI WUs running and one FreeHAL. 1 question following:

1. How can that be? With a quad core CPU and HT enabled, 8 'CPUs' are being used.

This morning I attached to FreeHAL to see what my i7 760 PC would do. I get the same results on my PC as well and noticed something else. 1 question following:

2. How does the 'Time remaining' increment with the elapsed time?

As I stated, FreeHAL does not have their own forum and the only ones pertaining to FreeHAL are in German which I cannot read.

Once I get the requested information, this thread can be locked and/or deleted.

Thank you for your patience in this endeavor. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Greetings Bill,

My apologies for what I'm about to say:

To post on that forum I would need to register. I assumed that the button that says 'Registrieren' is Deutch for 'Register' or some such. I clicked it and could not read the next page. There was a checkbox. I will not check a checkbox blindly. There was another button that also said 'Registrieren'. I clicked it and that's as far as I will go.

If I cannot get any answers here then I will ask the mods to delete this thread and I will stop crunching FreeHAL, which I will most likely do anyway.

Thanks for your reply Bill. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

I think there is choices at FreeHal, and the forums seem to be compromised since they had their servers returned. Before you needed to use a different password than the account.

I think you may need to set the Project Preferences in "My Account" to achieve the results you want to see. That is the FreeHal@Home Preferences ...

When you go to this page you will see many choices for crunching. This shows many choices from Intensive crunching (like any other project) by the number of cores, to non-intensive WUs (which run over the cores). The latter can run up to the number of cores you have available.

I crunch there, and run other projects (SETI, PG, malaria, etc) I run FreeHal as non-intensive and my quad cores are crunching 4 at a time.

So your answer may be there, as I think the default is one WU only ...
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

Nae problemo, I understand. That's where the link
to a Freehal forum on one of the Freehal pages took me so
I thought it might be of some help.

Siran,

I crunch Freehal on a Quad and other twin core machines, and always get 1 workunit per core or thread. Have you checked your project preferences?

Greetings Chris,

My preferences have not changed since I took care of my 860s* overheating problem with a liquid cooling system. The preferences were just how many cores to use when crunching. Thanks! :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

*My bad! Been off this PC for so long I forgot what the number was. I thought it was a 760, but it is an 860.

Greetings John,

My quest here is not to find out how to run FreeHAL, my quest is to understand this: If I have 8 SETI WUs crunching, how can I have a FreeHAL WU crunching at the same time? I have a quad core CPU w/HT, not a quad core w/HT +1. How can I have 9 WUs crunch concurrently? That is what I do not understand. Thanks! :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

I think John got it with the cpu intensive and non-cpu intensive settings. On my Quad I run 4 x Seti plus 4 x Freehal non-intensive all at once. On your quad the only way you could run 9 workunits is to have 8 Seti plus 1 non-intensive Freehal.

Greetings

Chris

Greetings Chris,

That is exactly what is going on on both our i7 PCs, 8 plus 1. I just fail to understand how this can be. If 8 cores are being used, how can another WU be crunching concurrently adding up to 9 'cores'? One cannot get 9 cores out of a quad core CPU, only 8.

Also, and I'm not 100% sure on this, but it seems that the FreeHAL WU restarts with every restart of BOINC. I just did a bunch of driver updates and noticed that the progress for FreeHAL dropped to 0% each time the PC restarted and BOINC restarted. It's at 4% right now. I'll reboot the PC to confirm my suspicion one way or another. Be back in a bit...

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

[edit]
It is confirmed! The FreeHAL WU restarts with the restart of BOINC. If running FreeHAL, don't shut down the PC or one will never finish a FreeHAL WU. :(

From what I have read on their forum the tasks for FreeHAL do not checkpoint. So you must leave BOINC running until the FreeHAL task finishes. If the page was translated correctly. It seems you can use hibernation if you need to power off the machine & your progress will be saved.

But the OS is multitasking and can use the 8 cores to do as many tasks as needed... in fact, while the 8 cores are used by SETI, they are also used by the OS to handle whatever else you are doing...
I guess the "non intensive" means it tells to BOINC: "I dont use a full CPU so you can run me even if all the available cores are beeing used"

Exactly. Just like it would use all 8 cores for CPU tasks + 0.xx cores for GPU tasks.

On my dual core machine for example I run:
- 2x 1.00 cores SETI CPU application
- 2x 0.05 cores Milkyway GPU application
- 1x 0.01 WUProp application

The highest I was running on that machine was 2.80 cores (2x SETI MB CPU + 1x SETI AP Hybrid app).

Greetings Horacio,

Ok, I believe I understand what is happening now. The FreeHAL WU would be like my having this browser running at the same time that SETI is crunching and because it is non-intensive, it can run with the other 8 WUs at the same time. Ok, it makes sense now. Thank you! :)

I will now have this thread locked/deleted unless there are any more thoughts that anyone has to add...

Keep on BOINCing...! :)
