I think that on the face of it, and of course pending further details, this is a bad business.

Sad news

Yes, very sad. Free speech carries responsibility.

I gather the Aussies aren't too pleased about this either. They have not broken
any laws in Australia over this but an Australian radio presenter has stated
that the two offending radio presenters involved in this may never work on
radio again. I expect the Australians may well now introduce a law against
this type of thing ever happening again similar to protective laws we have
here in the UK. In the UK, if you intend to broadcast a prank such as this one
you must first tell the person involved that you intend to broadcast first before
you can ask them any questions. The radio station involved is considered to
be a naff outfit anyway and currently this morning they are getting a very bad
response from the Australian general public. There being bombarded with hate mail
on their web site and twitter site too.

You're not wrong on that, The Sydney Morning Herald has gone to a full page spread on the story. Not very often they do that.

Ashes to ashes, and wait it out for the dust to settle and be forgotten?

Royal hoax radio show cancelled

... The pair have been on leave since the incident and a music-based show without a host DJ has been broadcast in their show's place.

"We look forward to Mel and MC returning to work when the time is right, in roles that make full use of their talents," said Rhys Holleran of Southern Cross Austereo, owner of 2Day FM...

All still rather sad, and for what outcome?

And so for yet more pranks?

Michael Christian back on air two months after Kate prank call

One of the two Australian DJs who made a prank call to the London hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated is back on air.

Michael Christian was suspended two months ago by 2Day-FM in Sydney after the nurse who answered the phone - and believed the callers to be the Queen and Prince Charles - was found dead.

Mr Christian is broadcasting on sister-station Fox FM in Melbourne.

His co-presenter at the time of the prank, Mel Greig, is still off the air. ...
