Hi all..
I have 2 computers on my account. 1 of them is in need of a hardware repair <most likely a replacement fan>. Unfortunatly, that computer has a lot of work units on it. can i copy that computers seti data directory onto a usb stick & then copy then paste it into the working computers data directory? I would prefer that option to having to reset the project before getting the computer fixed, as time is short on the deadline for reporting. All thoughts on weather the seti servers will recognise the workunit result if it is crunched on another computer would be useful. Thank you for your help.

Short answer - not without a lot of very hard work, and with no guarantee of success.

S@H is pretty good at managing re-assigning work units to other people if you fail to process them in time, and you will get a nice fresh bunch once your sick cruncher is back in action.

If the tasks are reported late, there is a chance that they have not been sent to an other computer yet. Even if they have been sent to another computer, if you report them before the other computer does, then you will get credit if your result matches. NOTE: The third computer will get credit if it returns correct results before its deadline, even if you return your results before it gets its results in.

Getting a new fan put in should not take that long. If you are somewhat handy, you may be able to do it yourself.

Thanks Bob. I just wish the estimated repair time was as quick as your reply.

I am still courous as to what the long answer is bob, I have time to attempt it but need to know your proposed method. While I accept there is no guarentee of sucess, like each & every work unit we process in the hope of finding et, it is worth a try.

There is a fairly simple way to get yourself out of the current predicament.

1) stop BOINC on both machines.
2) On the target machine (the good one) move the BOINC Data directory tree to a temporary location.
3) Copy the BOINC data directory tree from the source machine to the target in the exact same location that the BOINC data directory was moved from.
4) Restart BOINC on the target machine (it will now appear to be the source machine).
5) Set No New Tasks on this machine for all projects.
6) Let it work through all the tasks and force updates.
7) Turn off BOINC.
8) Move the BOINC data directory to a temporary location (You will use this to restore back to the original computer).
9) Copy the Original BOINC data directory back into place.
10) Restart BOINC.

How to find the BOINC data directory. Options:
1) Look at the first few lines of the message log on a fresh start of BOINC.
2) the default location of the directory is different for each OS. Vista and Win7 have a default location of c:\ProgramData\BOINC. The default location in XP is c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC.

Unfortunately, you cannot copy tasks from one directory structure to another. The server tracks which ID received each task and will not accept it from any other computer id.

Thank you John. so far so good. 1 unit completed, uploaded & validated. I Think they have sent me an experimental large workunit, so far 33 hrs 50 mins, estimate to completion 77 hr 46 mins, with a work unit that size i would have thought it was an astropulse file, but no, its seti@home enhanced ver 6.03. anyways its all systems go here on the working cruncher <an hp desktop running vista basic 2* 2.80ghz cpu, 2 gig phyisical, 4.5 gig virtual memory> :)

Crunching time depends on the angle range.
