I was wondering has anyone though about 2 wireless routers being pairing the with 2
parabolic dishes.
the dishes would give the routers almost 100db of passive noise free gain and make them point-able.
this is admittedly a temporary solution, but would the 100 to 600 mb additional
bandwidth 1 or 2 pairs could provide not be welcome till something more permanent is done?

What size dishes do you think would be needed to get 100dB gain? |

The SSL is something like 2.5 miles from where the other end would need to be. The equipment to do that is available, but would be a waste of money for a "temporary solution".

Not only that there would be the small issue of getting the uni to agree to having the dish put onto its building - and you thought getting them to agree to allow S@H to use the whole of its 1Gb cable was difficult...

A 1 meter dish should be enough.
the dishes could be pointed though a window or a wall as long as the metal content was low.
the ptp connection would be to the nearest wired building.
And as long as the routers are reliable they need not be commercial.
my thoughts were along the lines of 2 donated routers, 2 donated dishes, from like direct tv, possibly 2 hand built high q antennas put components in box put box in window plug in to power and network.
if the nearest possible connection is 2 1/2 miles away this would not work,
but I have seen several remarks about the fiber optic cable only needing to be run 1000 yards down hill.
for that this could easily work.

What is technically possible (technically this could be done), and what is politically allowed are 2 different things.
Any network infrastructure stuff like that, that needs to connect to the University network, is the domain of the University IT department, and only their approved gear gets connected, which is fair enough. They will be the ones that have the headache if some random piece of gear causes problems elsewhere on the network.

IIRC back in the classic days SETI@Home was actually getting their internet connection for wu's from a microwave internet connection across the San Francisco bay. However, I think it was pretty unreliable. Over 1 or 2 miles a system would probably be OK, but I don't know what they would be able to do for bandwidth these days.
We are only now starting to get into the realm of wireless GiB for LANs with 802.11ac.

What is really frustrating is that there is a 1Gb ready cable in place, but because of the uni's rules/politics only 10% of it can be used.
