Is a Galaxy 61TGS4HX2LTX GeForce GT 610 GC worth $25 in terms of Boinc crunching? I'm thinking about adding a GPU to one of my older systems to take the load off its CPU. (It has other duties as well.) David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Is a Galaxy 61TGS4HX2LTX GeForce GT 610 GC worth $25 in terms of Boinc crunching? I'm thinking about adding a GPU to one of my older systems to take the load off its CPU. (It has other duties as well.) The NVIDIA GeForce 610M is an entry level dedicated laptop graphics card and based on the same chip like the Geforce GT 520M or GeForce GT 520MX. It is based on the GF119 like the GT 520M and can feature clock rates up to 520MX level (900MHz). Using DDR3, the 64 Bit memory bus may become a bottleneck for the graphics card. Furthermore, low clocked versions are also seen in the wild. Our Acer Aspire 5750G review unit for example was clocked only at 672 MHz (lower than the 740MHz of the GT 520M). GT610. Not very much, 2 CPU cores I think. |

I do not know enough about nvidia but an ati hd5570 will out preform my fx 8150 8 core cpu even overclocked so do some web searching I have found and bought 5570's on ebay for $25 you just have to be patient. |

While it's not a very powerful GPU, it would probably give those old boxes a big boost. It's not a big expense, and it doesn't need much power.. I have a couple of even more puny Geforce 8400s in a couple of old Core 2 machines. Even those cards boost the throughput of those boxes by about 50%. So adding that card into an old box is probably about like adding a core2 duo CPU. Give it a go if you want. Ian |

not recommending the 5570 just saying any gpu supported by seti client's will boost performance hugely think of what 1 good card in every old clunker could do!!! |

Would have thought this EVGA GeForce GT 620 @ $29.99 would be a better bargain for Seti crunching. |

Would have thought this EVGA GeForce GT 620 @ $29.99 would be a better bargain for Seti crunching. The 620 has twice the CUDA cores as the 610, and close to what the old 8800 GT had. The 620 would be a much better investment than the 610. If you move up to around 384 CUDA cores you would be talking some decent numbers. Still, the 620 should be able to complete a shorty MB in around 10 minutes whereas a good CPU, with an optimized app, would take around 30 minutes. Big difference. |

If you move up to around 384 CUDA cores you would be talking some decent numbers And the 630 is even better and the GT 550 ti is even better than that and it goes on and on and on... It's best to come up with a max you want to spend and what your power supply will handle and then decide what you can get for it. :) |

I suggested that 620 with its 96 cores because it was only $5 more than the 610, 48 cores, the original poster had asked about. Of course he can get much faster GPU's but just to go to the 630 would at least double the price to $54.99 on that site. Probably more that he is willing or able to afford. I am sure if he could afford it he would fit a 680 or 690 and stop crunching with the cpu, because it's contribution would be insignificant |

I'm with WinterKnight. For 5 bucks more you'll get a card that is almost twice as fast. Good catch WK. Just keep in mind it's still a slower card than your 440. |

I suggested that 620 with its 96 cores because it was only $5 more than the 610, 48 cores, the original poster had asked about. Thanks for all the advice, guys. Yes, if I could afford it I'd get a 690 and replace my 440. This cheap card isn't intended to replace the 440, it's intended to replace the CPU as the Boinc cruncher in a box that has no GPU. Actually, I may be willing to go as high as the $55 630, but let me ask a couple of questions. For double the price, will I get double the Boinc performance vs. the 620? And if I do go with a 630, which one? Tiger has two for that price, the EVGA and the XFX. The latter comes with a free copy of Call of Duty 4, which doesn't interest me in the least, but it makes me wonder if it's a poorer card to have a free game included for the same price. Either way, I have to do it by tomorrow when the rebate expires. (Actually, so does the 620's.) From what I've read, the 630 is effectively a renamed 440. Joe |

Just for today at newegg "http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?nm_mc=EMC-SD112012&cm_mmc=EMC-SD112012-_-SD112912-_-item-_-combo" a hole pc minus hd and mem for $229.99 after $20 mir ! the power supply is modest at 500watt and might not support the big boys but would support 2 more modest midrange boards. It has 2 pci express slots 1 x16 the other x1 but with a $25 to $30 riser card from star tech.com it to can be x16 too if necessary. So for 230 you have box for another 50 you have 8gig of pc1866, that is for $280 you have a server load box with 2 expantion slots for later expantion plus a leftover mouse and kb . If you load os and tasks from a server no hd or cd are needed and though not recommender the power supply could support 1 hd5970 with 3000 streaming cores. that can output 4.65 teraflops, or 2 lesser cards someone else can fill in the blanks_____ for nvidia I do not know them well enough. Until l I get enough gpu tasks to get real numbers I can not say for sure but, I will expect to better a rac of 120,000 in primgrid ,and expect to get at least 60,000 in seti with my 4.1 teraflop machine. So build cheap, build smart, build lots over time. |

<borrowing much material from Alex Storey's new comparison thread> Ok, disclaimers: Yeah yeah yeah. Most info from Seti’s 3rd most important bookmark I'll try to remember that for next time. First number (after the GPU number) is GFLOPS. Last number is the whole point of this little exercise and is GFLOPS per US dollar. Prices are conservative (especially for the low end cards) but realistic. In the outage-caused absence of any final feedback from you guys, I went with the 630. From these numbers, it looks like I should have sprung for the 640 or 650, but I don't think they were on as good a sale as the 630. I suppose I could return it and get a 640, but the lost shipping costs would probably eat up the savings in the sale price. Aside: I don't like the way UPS is handing off my packages to USPS lately. They take 2-3 days longer to arrive. I ordered the 630 last Friday and it still hasn't come. Keep in mind there's a Tigerdirect warehouse outlet about 4 miles from me, so I could have driven over and gotten it, but I get more bonus points on my credit card by going through the web site. I *really* wish TD would offer store pickup as a shipping option. Joe sez: From what I've read, the 630 is effectively a renamed 440. Now ya tell me! ;) David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

[quote] that does look like a good deal, but amd just released, amd accelerated streaming sdk 2.8, it is supposed to double opencl performance so all ati cards hd5570 and up just got twice as fast. Though because is an update for opencl it may work for opencl compliant nvidia cards as will. some one please test this and post back. |

UPS's web site, which wouldn't even acknowledge the tracking number until today, said it would be delivered Friday. However, it was sitting on the porch when I got home today. But now that I have it, I'm chicken to put it in! Maybe this weekend... David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

... now that I have it, I'm chicken to put it in! Maybe this weekend... That's part of it. But also, the computer it's going in has another one sitting on top of it, and I'll probably have to shut that one down and disconnect it to get it out of the way. Then, the one it's going in runs my radioreference.com feed (which is why I want to take the load off its CPU) and I don't want to keep that down any longer than necessary. Plus, I'm not even sure this card will go into this machine. Does it have a slot that fits? Does the PSU have the capacity and connections? The card wants two 6-pin or 8-pin power leads. Heck, I don't even think the CD drive works, but I have a few dead boxes sitting around so I can swap that out if I need to. ... now that I have it, I'm chicken to put it in! Maybe this weekend... The 630 should not need any extra power at all, my GTX 660 only needed one 6-pin connector as did the GTX-650 Ti. |
