It is a homemade Kraut cutter, J Mercer is correct.

However, it's been pointed out to me by two separate people that a Cabbage isn't strictly a root vegetable, One of those is where you eat the root such as a parsnip or carrot etc. But a cabbage does have roots to grow directly in the ground as against say sprouts which are picked off a stem. If I confused people accept my apologies it wasn't intentional.

If it is the feeling here that because I didn't state clearly a leafy vegetable, and J Mercer only got it because I gave the answer away, then I'll make this null and void. Else I'll give the win to J mercer. I'll leave this open for a bit to gauge opinion. It's only a game but we don't want people peeved.

I am second generation removed from the Fatherland.
My grandfather made homemade Kraut. He passed some 30 years ago, but I still recall the fermenting crocks in the basement. His cabbage cutter didn't look quite like that, more like a monster wooden cheese grater.
Two wooden rails and a slider, with the multiple blades beneath. You put the victim cabbage inbetween the rails, and ran the slider back and forth, with the cabbage bits falling into the crock. When it got close to the end of one cabbage, you put another on top to continue, lest your knuckles get too close to the blades.

Well I started the thread so I guess it's my call. If you say give it back to Chris, then I say, Have at it Chris. That was a good one.
