It is a homemade Kraut cutter, J Mercer is correct. I am second generation removed from the Fatherland. My grandfather made homemade Kraut. He passed some 30 years ago, but I still recall the fermenting crocks in the basement. His cabbage cutter didn't look quite like that, more like a monster wooden cheese grater. Two wooden rails and a slider, with the multiple blades beneath. You put the victim cabbage inbetween the rails, and ran the slider back and forth, with the cabbage bits falling into the crock. When it got close to the end of one cabbage, you put another on top to continue, lest your knuckles get too close to the blades. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
