some people have bashed the project so many times I wonder what they are in for ? Is it a competion who has the highest RAC or are there some people still here who know the core surpose of this project :

Finding E.T. some day in the future

If the project goes cold for a while due to circumstances beyond the control of the volunteers working at Berkeley ($$$$!) and you don't like it why don't you just move on... No hard feelings ;-)

I remember last year around this time we had a mega outage of over a month didn't we and most of you still came back...

I also have to work with limits, proxy's and a lot of "manual care" for the project, my RAC has also dropped about 4000 but it's the end result that counts.

Have a wonderful sunday anyway wherever you are on our tiny planet !

I hope you are having a great Sunday, as well. Thanks for the wishes.

This is just one of those human psychology things.

I don't believe there is a person here who isn't willing to wait for the project leaders / staff / whatever to do whatever it is they need to do. I don't think there's a person here who isn't reaching for the "spot the alien" brass ring.

What I do think is that it is perfectly natural for people who experience a problem and simultaneous information blackout to "panic."

I also believe that there is more than a little frustration with the staff and management because they don't seem to be reacting to the situation. Any reaction would be reassuring. We're social animals that need reassurance and never more than when we are powerless.

If your airplane hits turbulence, having the pilot tell you "We've hit some turbulence. We'll be out of it in a few minutes," doesn't change the turbulence, but it does reassure the passengers.

In this case, we know that turning AP and MB tasks on simultaneously does not work. Several of us have expressed this. It's like telling the pilot "Here's the way to avoid the turbulence."

When there is no action, no response, and no nothin', the passengers start getting antsy about there being no pilot in the cockpit. They start saying ugly stuff like "The pilot is an idiot," and complaining and telling everyone around them that they've spilled their drink, and threaten to never fly this airline again. Maybe the pilot can't turn the plane for some reason. The passengers don't know that unless someone tells them.

In this case, several people have told the pilot how to avoid the turbulence and the response from the pilot has been to reduce his airspeed but keep going in exactly the same direction and at the same altitude.

The passengers can't fly the plane, so all they can do is keep telling the pilot, who seems to be ignoring their suggestions, their discomfort, and the insane howling from the guy in the back who has a fear of flying. They (passengers) don't understand the response from the pilot, so they lash-out.

Eventually the plane lands, everybody glares at the crew on their way out of the plane, and the next time they need to fly they buy a ticket on the same airline if it's the best route with the cheapest tickets.

Nobody's going anywhere. They're just complaining to everyone around them and glaring at the crew because it's the only thing they can do.

As you very correctly pointed-out, there have been times when the guys were keeping this whole thing together with bubble-gum and baling wire and it failed.

Everyone's still here, they are still crunching, and we all still like the project.

It's not about "RAC" except as a measurement of how busy our computers are and we do seem to like to keep them busy. I dislike 40mph speed limits around construction zones on the interstate highways, too. "RAC" is just the speedometer that seems to be yelling at us, "Hey! You're really going slow!" The longer the trip, the more uncomfortable I am with driving slowly and this is a very long trip.

We might as well all take a deep breath, order another drink to replace the one we've spilled, say something nice to the crew, and smile, smile, smile. The pilot is going to do what the pilot is going to do.

This plane isn't on fire, or nosing into the ground.

Let's all try to relax as best we can (very hard for me; my personality isn't bent that direction). Matt will be back soon and hopefully he can find the problem and fix it. Let's not make his return feel like he's walked into a plane full of crazy people.

Personally, after I took a really deep breath and regained my sanity, my response to this crisis was the most useful thing I could think of: I sent another $100+ to the GPUUG, so if Matt gets back and says, "Oh, we need a ___," hopefully the resources will exist to send him a ____ and we can all get back to full-speed crunching as quickly as possible.

Yes, I'd rather have spent that money on a new crunching GPU, but obviously the best way for me to "be happy" is for the project to work and that takes resources.

If someone's got the time to help Slavac gather resources, that would be a good way to stay busy and do a different kind of work for the project. If you've got a spare $10-$20, or a spare $200, send it (my preference is to give it to the GPUUG where I know it will get budgeted to whatever Matt needs, but that's just me; you do whatever makes you the most comfortable).

GPUUG Fundraising

I feel a lot better having done something useful. Maybe that would work for you, too.

I am using a local proxy server. Requests with NNT selected always complete and requests for work complete once in awhile. I have been getting many server responses with the following error messages:

11/18/2012 5:48:17 PM | SETI@home | Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA
11/18/2012 5:48:53 PM | SETI@home | [error] Can't parse workunit in scheduler reply: unexpected XML tag or syntax
11/18/2012 5:48:53 PM | SETI@home | [error] No close tag in scheduler reply

Most of them are:

Can't parse info in scheduler reply: unexpected XML tag or syntax

Looks like the replies are truncated or missing, wondering if this could be part of the scheduler problem.

When setting up boinc to use a proxy server, can I enter multiple addresses in the don't use proxy for field? Maybe separated by a semi colon.

Problem is this project is a hobby, not fully loved by berkley....its an experiment, not fully endorsed by the school....it is a hobby, where spare computer time is donated by volunteers to look for radio waves from life forms out in space....so far nothing has been found...so we have been told...if there in no work oh well....just because some of these guys out there have spent tens of thousands of dollars on these monster computers, who is the fool? i have a great computer for playing great games on, for watching movies on....and the best thing is i can record my music on it....i have multiple uses for my computer.... What else do you do on your computer? Why do you need 4,5 or 10 or 50 computers running this stuff on it? Really?
I understand you might be mentioned by Seti if life is found out there, maybe, but dont count on it :(

We do all for a dream, help to find our little green ET friend (or enemy who knows?) Who needs anything else? A dream... just a dream... but what is a man without his dreams?

Sweet dreams to all in this and all nights.

Like many, I am presently using a proxy as the only working method of receiving WUs. What is the technological reason that SETI will talk to me through a stranger but not a direct call? Have we angered her and now have to pass notes through a friend?

It is a serious question: why does these transfers still work though a proxy?

It is a serious question: why does these transfers still work though a proxy?

Don´t remeember exactly the thread but look for a possible explanation given by Richard on the forum (the best one i see until now), i´m not a network expert to try to explain but is something related to the delay taked by the ACK signal.

Problem diagnosed. Short answer, too many people attempting to crunch for SETI. We all knew this day would come. So either accept that you may have dry periods or crunch for other projects until the long term fix can be implemented.

My iMac has no problems up/downloading wu`s. Been getting them all right along. The puter uses an ATI card where as my windows based puters all have nvidia cars in them and they are stuck on empty....why would the iMac continue to work flawlessly and the Windows based ones dry up?

In case somebody missed it,

"Continued server problems.
We're continuing to have issues due to a database problem early last week and a botched attempt to fix it.

The problem is that the result and host tables in the database have grown large enough, and hosts have gotten fast enough that the lookup of result in process for a host and the enumeration of new results to send don't finish before the web connection times out either on the server or the client side. This resulted in hosts being assigned large number or results to compute without the transaction that tells them about these results being completed. The host. think it received no results would then contact the server for more results, which it would again not receive.

This isn't a hardware problem. The database currently fits in memory and the processors are fast. We've just crossed a threshold where each host computes fast enough that host queues and the result table have become large enough to cause this problem. To solve it, we've put per host limits on results in process back in place. But hosts that are having this problem will probably continue to have it until the average number of results per host has fallen to a workable level. That could take weeks.

For a more permanent fix, we plan do more work in each result by quadrupling the size of the workunits. But that fix will probably take months to implement and test. 19 Nov 2012 | 1:02:54 UTC · "

Thank You Bill,

At least there is an answer now, and the speculation can cease.

And the Crickets nose dived a couple of hours ago as well. By the look of it, about the same time as Eric's post.

My concern is it mentions a database problem that developed early last week.
The Scheduler timeout issues have been occuring for almost a month.
