Chris-there's the problem--you won't get enough input. The lab staff simply won't have the time to give you what you want and people like Richard can only give so much info. Sadly you are right Blurf, but I'll leave the offer on the table. If at some time in the future a regular source of worthwhile info does become available, it can be re-visited.

Sadly, these last two days, my PC has got no work at all from S@H. It has done a ton of work folding proteins and putting them away in the POEM draw, but SETI seems to be under the impression I don't want work.

The only "band-aid" solution for this days if try a Proxy+TCP optimizer, if works you will get your work (limited 100WU per GPU/CPU but is better than nothing), if no... you will stay with the proteins for a while.

I think we all have to realize here that the collective performance capabilities of the computers attached to this project has exponentially increased while manpower and resources at SETI have been kept about the same. We went through a long outage and with difficulty getting tasks not to long ago historically speaking, and at this point it is just another hiccup. I have been with this project over 13 years now, and have no plans to abandon it because of my machines not getting enough WU's to crunch.

Just a reminder. Mike, I have to disagree with you. This project would NOT be here without the volunteers, that is the whole premise of this project. We are the employees who do not get paid (actually, we pay to be employed (computer equipment, upgrades, electricity, etc)). This is not a town with a fire dept and a volunteer fire department that would still continue to function if the volunteers all quit. If all the volunteers of seti quit the project would fall flat on its face. When a whole entire project relies 100% on its volunteers you would hope the 'project' would bend over backwards to make sure they are happy. I am not saying Seti has not, I am not a very active member posting/reading. I just download the program, check for updates, and let it run its magic on my machines. I can not imagine the amount of work a project like this would encompass but I am glad to lend my computers time. Just remember, even though we are 'volunteers', we are a LOT MORE than just 'volunteers', we are 'the project'.! ____________

Do let me know when you have all the volunteers lined Missing the point much? Not saying that will ever happen, we all know it will not. The point being there would be no project without us. Sure, if things ever got bad enough I'm sure a significant amount of people might move on, but it would have to get pretty bad I imagine for the die-hards to quit. ____________

Do let me know when you have all the volunteers lined It's a client-server project, so both ends are important. I prefer to think of both ends being dedicated to the search for e.t. so it's all parts of the project against the difficulties in detecting technology at astronomical distances. Some very rough calculations suggest that a reasonable balance might be cash donations to support the server end around 2 percent of the client elecricity costs. IOW, if external participants turned off crunching for one week in each year and donated money equal to the reduced electricity cost of that week, the basic imbalance might be fixed. Joe

Lost work credits, One of your hosts has no work at all, even completed tasks, check whether No New Tasks has been set, All tasks for computer 1722399 The other host is running the Buggy Nvidia 296.19 drivers with the sleeping Monitor Bug, so instead of computing on the Cuda device, it falls back to an emulated Cuda device that can't be used, then computes on the CPU instead, Very Very Slowly, that's why your RAC is lower, upgrade to 301.xx or later drivers, or 290.xx or earlier drivers: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=2710188025 setiathome_CUDA: device 1 is emulation device and should not be used, supports 9999.9999 NVidia driver problems which cause computation errors Claggy

So, funding has been cut. It has always been apparent, dispite all the volunteers, that Berkeley has never really backed this effort. What a shame. Additional followup: http://regents.universityofcalifornia.edu/regmeet/may11/a4attach1.pdf There are over 100 pages of detail on grants. I haven't found the 2011 online, but that is my bad search skills I'm sure. ____________

I started in the pioneer year of 1999, and I am starting to question this effort. What you give away for free is only a waste if you think it is. Nobody else but you is allowed to decide this for you. So DECIDE If it's not worth it to you to support this project, despite it's warts, uninstall BOINC or adopt a different program. If it is worth it to you to support this project, stop complaining about warts and understand that this program is not fully funded by any stretch of the imagination.

OK – I started this Thread out of frustration and have the following observations:
| ID: 1309610 · | |
One last and I think most important observation. Look at the posts in this and other Threads. You will see many, many, many persons grumbling, who have large credits, and no Green Star next to their names. They have never given a penny to maintain or expand the effort in the lab! Look deeper and you will see that many of these people have spent large amounts of money on their computer(s). We are now seeing the result of the vast increase in the power of our (Volunteer) computers without the same happening in the Lab. To all those without a ‘Green Star’ give a few dollars, it won’t hurt. Donating can be done anonymously and therefore no "Green Star" also they only last for 12 months so someone who has donated for say 10 years may not have this year. While it would be nice to see more people donate please do not pick on people with no Green Star. Even if they have large credits. ____________

Bare in mind boinc and the programs not using boinc doing volunteer science would likely not be here if seti had not led the way in January of 1999. So at the vary least seti should get sum credit for anything coming out volunteer computing.
