Actually I did, at least that's what My Dog tags and Marksmens medal with Grenade says.

When I was 18 I was drafted in the Army of the Free State of Trieste, which did not have any army. So I was visited, declared able and sent home. But I served as a volunteer in the Alpine Rescue Corps, taking part in several rescue operations, included the Vajont Dam disaster of October 9 1963.

My respect goes out to all the people who served in wars. Must not have been an easy job.

My Dad said it's not for everyone, He was proud of Me no matter what, of course at the time I could probably out shoot My Brother, I still wished I could have hit that 1200M target(anything less was easy), the bullet fell short, the bullet ran out of energy, I was good enough for the Riflemans medal, but that's that...

My grandfather served in the Army, however, his service was entirely stateside as an MD in one of the military hospitals. Depending on exactly when, either for US service men or German POWs captured in North Africa.

My Explorer Post adviser served in the brown water Navy in Vietnam. My boss served as a Marine. The guy in the next office served as a Marine. There are many veterans around, you just have to figure out who they are.

I was too young for Vietnam (my 18th birthday fell in the draft registration holiday that happened after the end of the war).

I too, somehow missed the dates crafted to bring young men to their deaths in Vietnam.

I dunno how......I just was not asked to serve and die, thank God.

I stayed at home and listened to PPM and Dylan and MASH.
And knew somehow, that they were right.

MASH somehow hit home.
Because it was such a great bit of acting, it hit home.
That was the sum total of my Vietnam experience.

And that scared the s''' outta me.
