I did some housekeeping, removed some unused programs. Removed Catalyst 12.1 and installed 11.11. Ran Norton Win Doctor, reinstalled BOINC .36. I'm ready to try a few more APs, if I could get some downloaded to this machine. The machine with the 4670 is loaded with them. It takes about 6-7 hours apiece on that machine.

6-7 hours isnt bad on a 4XXX card. just remember that card is now 4 generations old. My current ATI/ AMD 7970 can do 3 AP's at a time in 90 minutes if they are zero blanked

Things may be looking up. Look at the last 7 here http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=6797524&offset=0&show_names=0&state=0&appid=12

They sent 3 after I installed Catalyst 11.11, 1 was an error, 1 a success, and one the confusing handful of seconds short. I installed 11.12 on top of 11.11 and, well, things are looking better. They are sending some numbered like this ap_24au12ab_B5_P1_00076_20121108_06198.wu_1_0 that are only taking about 30 minutes at 80% GPU load. Then they have the nerve to send AstroPulse 6.01 that has an estimate of 27 hours for something the 6850 does in 30 minutes. Whatever. I'm convinced it's a software problem somewhere. Which makes you wonder why Catalyst 11.11 & 12 are half the size of 12.1 and they left OpenCL out of everything newer than 12.1.

Try to remove binary kernel cache files after driver change.

It had a good few hours, now it's giving mostly errors again. Have you noticed that even Driver Sweeper doesn't remove all the drivers? You can remove the Prefetch files, restart, and they are back. I think the main problem is...XP is dead. You need to upgrade to use the newest version of OCL http://developer.amd.com/tools/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/system-requirements/ Not sure what to do next, I installed this http://developer.amd.com/tools/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/downloads/download-archive/ See what happens next...

Another 51 minutes, and another error.

Sounds like Maximum Time Exceeded Errors, try using Fred's BoincRescheduler, and use the protect against -177 errors setting, see if that makes a difference,

Then try adding -unroll 10 -ffa_block 6144 -ffa_block_fetch 1536 to your ap_cmdline_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati.txt file, that should speed the app up.

Claggy

Ding Ding Ding

We may have a winner here. Of course, it's always the last thing you try. Kinda has to be the last thing I guess...
I really wasn't looking to speed it up from 70%, but, I did notice the successes favored the higher GPU usage. It went up to around 80-90%, sometimes staying close to 90% on some APs. The APs usually finish in around 40 minutes at that usage, and, they have all passed. The fan is running 4% faster, the temp about 3 C hotter, but, they pass. I don't understand why a higher usage would make a difference myself, oh well.

I also found you can use the newer AMD App with the 12.1 Catalyst Driver in XP. You have to use the 12.1 driver, nothing newer works for me in Boinc. I was still getting Errors with the newer App though. So far, NO Errors since the speed up!

Thanks.

Now if I could just get a boatload of ATI APs.

As you found by yourself XP is not dead. Just big companies wanna make it dead to increase their revenues for selling newest and crappiest than ever bits.
Newer doesn't mean better. It's about M$ OS, it's about ATI drivers...

ATi apps for both AstroPulse and MultiBeam kind of tasks are available on SETIbeta project currently as stock apps.
You can take them there. Both are compatible with SETImain tasks too.
As initial guide find release notes for initial AP and MB OpenCL builds (should be available on Lunatics site or here as citation maybe).
With few additions they will go.

If you want to use GPU only for AP tasks you can tune already distributing stock OpenCL AP, via ap_cmdline*.txt file.
Stock config currently has only one big limitation: it can't run few tasks simultaneously. So maybe it would be wise to aquire corresponding builds as a stock binaries and then to make app_info.xml for them and use as anonymous platform (this config will allow multiple tasks per GPU).
There are ATi GPU AP available on Lunatics too, but currently they quite outdated vs last builds so I would recommend to take binaries from SETIbeta.
Will see how fast we can do update on Lunatics in this part.

This is interesting. I recently attempted to 'optimize' the machine from the top post and ran into another complication. The CPU task for the 603 units seem to work fine, however, the app for the 4670 doesn't. I'm getting the notorious 'computation error' immediately when trying to run a 601 unit with 'ati13ati'. I've tried altering the numbers in the app.info command line by half, then even removed it entirely. I also upped the CPU usage, nothing worked. If I understand you, I can use an app from the SETIbeta program to replace this old ATI app? I've looked around and can't find SETIbeta. Can someone point out how I can use a SETIbeta app to run on the 4670 for 601 APs while using the optimized CPU app for 603s? Is that possible?

So, to get setiathome_6.99_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_sah.exe I'd have to join SetiBeta and have it downloaded to the program? A few of those links there makes Firefox choke. Right now I have 7 601s downloaded in the program and have the GPU suspended because they keep erring out.

If you did that, you'd also get the documentation and other necessary support files needed to make the application work.

You'd also get an <app_version> section written into your client_state.xml file, so you could construct an app_info reference for use here without guesswork.

Well, I'm new around here. I still don't understand how SetiBeta is organized. It's part of this project? I don't see it listed as a different project. It doesn't help when the 'getting started' link is a dead end, and the 'Create account' link throws a 'This Connection is Untrusted' warning. I did find this thread http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/forum_thread.php?id=1965 which is a card very similar to the 4670.

For you situation getting apps from SETi beta quite pointless, unfortunately. Your AP is up to day already. MB7 ATi has even bigger compatibility problems with low-end HD4xxx than AP6.

Crashes you see need debugging. If you ready to run app with debugging enabled I could send you link in PM.

Yes, the beta program would be rather pointless for the 4670, the 6850 would be a better candidate. After looking at the 6850 set idle, I was just trying to find some way to put it to work. I wanted to try things on the other machine first. The way I read your post, it almost sounded like I could just download the app and install it into the folder. I did finally get the 13ati app to work on the 4670, though it was a non standard way. It's about 5 hours into a 601, I will know if it's going to work correctly when it finishes in a couple of hours and tries to start another task. After that success, I tried it on the 6850. It worked much easier, I didn't have to do a thing. Check it out here http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=6797524 I was looking at the info on the failed 604s. It looks like the problem has already been listed, although I haven't a clue as to what a "Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x0040A1FA read attempt to address 0x009EB29C" means. I'm not even sure that's what caused the error, but, it is interesting....

Anyway, it's nice to hear the fan on the 6850 ramp up again :)

To know what caused error additional info required, can be gathered with debug build.

I had to remove the MB6 entry in the app.info to finally receive some 601 APs. Are they any help? http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=6797524&offset=0&show_names=0&state=0&appid=12 So, everything seems fine with the apps MB6_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_ATi_r390.exe & AP6_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATI_r555.exe I also found this old thread http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/forum_thread.php?id=1945 "transient"? The solution is to run by the transients fast so they don't bite you? :) I tried a number of different values and settled on this for the 601s -unroll 10 -ffa_block 5120 -ffa_block_fetch 1280 I never did have any problems with them, except for downloading them. I haven't seen a 604 in days.

You won't if you haven't put a 604 <app_version> section in your app_info, anyway the number doesn't matter, the work will only get done with whatever app is specified in your app_info, and it doesn't matter if it's calling itself a 601 or 604 app.

I tried making an entry for it. I think I need a reference to the command line file? I have copies of all the 604 files this time. What do I need to change here?
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>astropulse_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_100.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>ap_cmdline_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati.txt</name>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>astropulse_v6</app_name>
<version_num>604</version_num>
<avg_ncpus>0.07</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>0.2</max_ncpus>
<file_ref>
<file_name>astropulse_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_100.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>

This is what you need to add in addition to your existing <app_version> section:

<app_version>
    <app_name>astropulse_v6</app_name>
    <version_num>604</version_num>
    <platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
    <avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
    <max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>
    <plan_class>ati_opencl_100</plan_class>
    <file_ref>
        <file_name>astropulse_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati_100.exe</file_name>
        <main_program/>
    </file_ref>
    <file_ref>
        <file_name>ap_cmdline_6.04_windows_intelx86__opencl_ati.txt</file_name>
        <open_name>ap_cmdline.txt</open_name>
    </file_ref>
    <coproc>
        <type>ATI</type>
        <count>1.000000</count>
    </coproc>
</app_version>

If you put it before your existing <app_version> section, you'll get new work marked up as 604 (ati_opencl_100)

Nice. I changed the entry and now it's downloading a 604. I still have the command line set to -unroll 10 -ffa_block 6144 -ffa_block_fetch 1536 -hp
I received about 10 601s, so, it might be a while for the 604.
