Congrats to the winners from this side of the pond.

I see there are going to be three more democratic women in the Senate.

Congratulations are due to the countless number of folks who beavered away in the background. Those who administered and counted, collated and adjudicated - without you, and a structure that makes it all work, we would still be pondering on the outcome. I have a friend who is a returning officer over here and I know how much effort he has to put in to make sure it all happens smoothly on the day - and do the winners, or loosers, ever say thank you to him and his team as they make their speeches of victory or defeat??

I agree with Rob and Chris. But, the US use electronic vote recorders, I think?

Yes we have for a few years now. Unfortunately, as a printing/bindery worker, the switch to electronic machines took away much work from me. In Octobers of the past I would be busy die-cutting the strips that went into the old lever punch ballot machines. That ended about 3 or 4 years ago IIRC.

Different in every county. No standards. In Los Angeles it is optical, fill in the circle on a Hollerith size card. Other places optical on long paper forms. I think everyone got rid of punch cards. Wouldn't surprise me if some place was still using X's and a stamp pad with manual count.

When the 10 year Census forms appeared for 2001 and 2011 they were machine readable. So, when they asked a question and gave tick box options to answer (machine readable, so easy to enter the statistics).

I agree with the Census, but disagree the questions to do with lifestyle, and nothing to do with a Census.

When I answered the machine readable parts, I ticked all the boxes, to mess up the machine readability, and then wrote in the answer.
