	I don't like the sound of this at all. The Metropolitan Police is planning to sell off its headquarters to help save £500m over the next two and half years. New Scotland Yard in Victoria, central London, would be put up for sale under proposals designed to deliver savings and boost frontline policing. Police stations across London would also be under threat, with five already approved for sale, as the force seeks to dispose of a third of its estate. The Met has been tasked by the mayor's office with making savings of half-a-billion pounds by 2015. Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey told the deputy mayor for policing and crime, Stephen Greenhalgh, that if significant savings were to be made then a third of the Met's property estate needed to be disposed of. We have already lost two local police stations in my area, one of which is now a pub, which has resulted in police cars with blues and twos belting up and down roads everywhere because of having to travel further to their destinations. There must be better ways to save money. These Government instigated cuts are undermining the fabric of our country. We've already had the boneheaded decision to scrap the Ark Royal and the Harriers, which has resulted in the USMC buying them at rock bottom prices to use as spares, now we're flogging off London's police stations. 	In 1829, when Sir Robert Peel was Home Secretary, the first Metropolitan Police Act was passed and the Metropolitan Police Force was established. This new force superseded the local Watch in the London area and the original Bow Street Runners. The new force occupied a private house at 4, Whitehall Place, the back premises were used as a police station. This backed onto a court called Great Scotland Yard, one of three streets incorporating the words "Scotland Yard" in its name. The street names are said to have derived from the land being owned by a man called Scott during the Middle Ages. By 1887 the Police HQ embraced numbers 3, 4, 5, 21 and 22 Whitehall Place, numbers 8 and 9 Great Scotland Yard, numbers 1, 2 and 3 Palace Place and various stables and outbuildings. These headquarters were moved in 1890 to premises on the Victoria Embankment known as New Scotland Yard. In 1967, because of the need for a larger and more modern headquarters, a further move took place to the present site at Broadway, SW1, which is also known as New Scotland Yard.
