Hello fellow Cafe SETIzens!

In spirit of a true democratic republic, I'm looking for feedback on how all of you feel about comments with the pictures in the Count from X to X threads here in the SETI Cafe.

Please keep the discussion limited to this topic, but feel free to express how you feel. I will keep the voting open for one week and tally the votes on Monday, November 5th. If all of you decide that you're OK with people leaving comments, please place your vote. If you feel that you would rather keep the same theme going in that thread, please place your vote.

Currently, the rule to not allow comments is not listed in that thread, but there seems to be some belief that this used to be a rule for that series which has been left off as the threads progressed.

As always, I hope that whatever you guys and gals decide, that you have fun in all of the SETI@Home Cafe threads!

I say No Comments.....otherwise it gets diluted into pure spam.

No comments, as we have the Discussion thread curtesy of Gary C.

It is a picture thread, the idea being to post a picture, without needing comments. There are plenty of other threads you can post pictures and comments in.

I am totally stunned that anyone would complain about this.

Please no comments in the count to thread.

Good point Gary. For clarification, this is about leaving comments with the images and not about captions built into the image, such as some comic strips posted.

If this changes any of your votes, go ahead and re-cast if necessary.

I have found comments to be frequently helpful, and interesting.

There have been many examples in past incarnations of the thread with a photo of some RR locomotive, and a comment being about the RR company and location of the photo, and perhaps the circumstances of the photo being taken.

Under the proposed rule about "No comments", a large number of postings would have been deleted for no good reason.

Obviously if the comments are in violation of the rules at the left of the posting page, then those rules will apply.

Other than that, what is the harm?

No comments or captions (unless they are actually part of the picture).
Its about the finding the number, not being able to find a so called witty comment about (yet another) 1950s sewing pattern......

For comments (etc.) I vote to allow them.
If you don't like them it's not hard to scroll past.

OK if they add something to the image.

OK if they add something to the image.

Who can judge that? If I don't think the comment adds something can I ask for it to be removed. Of course not.

Either ALL comments (within the rules of course) can be allowed or none. Interesting, boring, funny or not you cannot discriminate, which was why I voted NO.

That's a definite 'maybe' then :)

As you are making this rather silly by unnecessary posting in the count to thread I can see this means a lot to you. So as you can get your way I will help by withdrawing my vote for no and voting yes instead and leaving you to enjoy the thread, I won't post in it again!

Ok, so by my count, we have:

No - 5

    Blurf
    Rob Smith
    Uli
Celt Tooth (I assume "Everything is in order" means don't change it.)
    Gary Charpentier ("Comments, no.")

Yes - 6

    Angela
    John McLeod VII
    Steven Meyer
    Shannock9
Bob DeWoody (notwithstanding judgment on whether it adds something or not.)
    Bernie Vine

Based upon this feedback from all of you, it seems that by a narrow margin it has been voted to allow comments in the thread, and hopefully it adds something to the image.

I'd like everyone to be cognizant of the fact that I usually allow the thread owner to set their own rules (within reason). If the thread owner of the "Count from X to X" series of threads explicitly disallows comments, then this may change for future variations of that series.

I want to thank everyone for speaking up and voting! I will leave this thread stickied for a few days so that everyone can see the outcome of the results.
