Hi, I had two units that were over 50% processed when suddenly they ended in computation errors. I'm afraid to take new work now. Is there a way to find out what happened? BOINC version is 7.0.29 from the Fedora 17 x86_64 repository. I think the error happened when I updated the Linux kernel to 3.6.3-1.fc17.x86_64 (from the official default repository). boincerr.log is empty and boinc.log doesn't show anything special. |

The application is SETI@home Enhanced v5.28. I don't know if you can see the work units here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?userid=2875599 |

Okay, I think it's unhidden now. Here's one of the tasks: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=2676930314 |

Now the tasks seem to have disappeared without a trace. I didn't know they do that. I'll try one more WU, and if it fails I'll save the task page before it's gone. I noticed that the processing seems to have failed exactly one hour after starting on the day that the computer clock had been turned backwards due to DST ending (but late in the evening, not early in the morning when the clocks should really be adjusted). The stderr log in the task was about XML errors. This is the relevant portion of my logs: 28-Oct-2012 21:28:50 [---] Resuming computation 28-Oct-2012 21:29:13 [---] Received signal 15 28-Oct-2012 21:29:13 [---] Exit requested by user 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] No config file found - using defaults 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.0.29 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.24.0 NSS/3.13.5.0 zlib/1.2.5 libidn/1.24 libssh2/1.4.1 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Data directory: /var/lib/boinc 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU L9400 @ 1.86GHz [Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6] 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Processor: 6.00 MB cache 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts nopl aperfmperf pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx smx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdcm sse4_1 lahf_lm ida dtherm tpr_shadow vnmi flexpriority 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] OS: Linux: 3.6.3-1.fc17.x86_64 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Memory: 3.70 GB physical, 4.00 GB virtual 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Disk: 9.06 GB total, 3.15 GB free 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Local time is UTC +2 hours 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] No usable GPUs found 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [SETI@home] URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID 6810350; resource share 100 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [SETI@home] General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 04-Mar-2009 20:16:30) 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [SETI@home] Computer location: home 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [SETI@home] General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Reading preferences override file 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Preferences: 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] max memory usage when active: 1895.82MB 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] max memory usage when idle: 3412.48MB 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] max disk usage: 2.16GB 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 % 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) 28-Oct-2012 22:30:26 [---] Not using a proxy Initialization completed 28-Oct-2012 22:30:28 [SETI@home] Restarting task 30se12aa.9319.8656.140733193388046.10.176_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 528 in slot 0 28-Oct-2012 22:30:28 [SETI@home] Restarting task 30se12aa.2971.10292.140733193388045.10.253_1 using setiathome_enhanced version 528 in slot 1 28-Oct-2012 22:30:53 [---] System clock was turned backwards; clearing timeouts 28-Oct-2012 21:31:14 [---] Resuming computation ---- snip ---- 28-Oct-2012 22:18:44 [---] Resuming computation 28-Oct-2012 22:30:55 [SETI@home] Computation for task 30se12aa.9319.8656.140733193388046.10.176_0 finished 28-Oct-2012 22:30:56 [SETI@home] Computation for task 30se12aa.2971.10292.140733193388045.10.253_1 finished 28-Oct-2012 22:30:57 [SETI@home] Started upload of 30se12aa.9319.8656.140733193388046.10.176_0_0 28-Oct-2012 22:30:58 [SETI@home] Started upload of 30se12aa.2971.10292.140733193388045.10.253_1_0 28-Oct-2012 22:31:01 [SETI@home] Finished upload of 30se12aa.9319.8656.140733193388046.10.176_0_0 28-Oct-2012 22:31:01 [SETI@home] Finished upload of 30se12aa.2971.10292.140733193388045.10.253_1_0 28-Oct-2012 22:36:00 [SETI@home] Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks. 28-Oct-2012 22:36:00 [SETI@home] Reporting 2 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks 28-Oct-2012 22:36:03 [SETI@home] Scheduler request completed 28-Oct-2012 23:12:08 [---] Resuming computation |

I've been told on Freenode that this is a known long-standing bug. So it might not be fixed in the near future. It would be nice if the BOINC Manager gave an explanatory error message when this happens – detecting errors is usually easier than fixing them. |
