I remember taking a train through kansas when I was quite young. Later on in life I asked a friend to take a picture of Kansas when they drove through. Obviously, you take a picture of a grain silo, or a tractor... ____________ BOINC WIKI

There's a lot there alright... There's even 1 giant wind turbine on the nearby Marine base in Barstow CA in sight of 2 smaller privately owned wind turbines. ____________ BSG Anthem My Facebook page

I wonder if their all paying their way... Probably, Coal Power production doesn't exist anymore in CA cause of air pollution control laws, so We have either Natural gas or Nuclear or Wind or Solar or Solar-Thermal... ____________ BSG Anthem My Facebook page

I wonder if their all paying their way... Once they are up, they are relatively cheap to run. This assumes that there is sufficient average wind to turn them enough to pay off the loan to erect them in the first place. I have heard that the average wind speed required is something like 15 mph. There are some places on earth where the wind blows nearly constantly at 15 to 20 mph (some of the islands in the Caribean come to mind here). ____________ BOINC WIKI

It costs about the same to add 1 MW of wind as it does to add 1 MW of coal. The fueling costs on wind are non-existant though.

Many of these wind generators carry dielsel engine driven motors inside them, John. Used when the wind is insufficient to turn the blades so the engine is started up automatically to keep the blade rotating slowly to stop any chance of getting bearing flats. So I wonder if this fire was caused by a fault with the diesel engine. ____________ The Kite Fliers -------------------- Kite fliers: An imaginary club of solo members, those who don't yet belong to a formal team so "fly their own kites" - as the saying goes.

I had seen this picture before and at that time the fire had been attributed to lubrication failure in the main bearings. ____________ ****** "Ask not, what your kitty can do for you. Ask what you can do for your kitty." As it is kitten, so shall it be done.

I work with an energy provider and we have a tariff formula for so called 'green' energy. It's much more expensive than a normal tariff formula. Most people think they really get clean energy for it but all they do is helping invest in clean energy. I think the company should be more clear on that matter towards their customers. Most of those people don't even know they get 'normal' energy!

Yes the 2.5 and 3.0MW generators do. But how many loddy fires do you hear about? As long as the diesel coolant side if OK then fires are unlikely. It does not mean this was not such a cause, but ... ____________ It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues
