No, I agree with Carlos. I had never seen such a big mezzaluna before and so I was quite mystified by its use. Clearly the mezzaluna Carlos posted was never intended for piles of fresh herbs. It makes far more sense to use something that massive to cut pizzas.

An 'authentic' tool to knead your dough. The other end is to pierce the dough, when it's in the oven, to check if it's fully baked. (a wild guess...)

"Figure AM15f shows an ice pick with a very unusual ice tongs attachment to the handle. The bent/twisted wire tongs are serrated on the inside surface to aid in gripping the chips of ice produced by the pick. The brass plate on the tongs is marked WIS LAKES ICE & CARTAGE CO"

BilBg has it spot on, although John and Carlos both got the ice pick part. What I was looking for was the tongs part. I made it too easy by not loading it to photobucket first with a new name.
