Nope. Sorry Vic. Another valiant effort, but that is not the use of those chains in my kitchen.

Not a kitchen decoration. Those chains serve as functional kitchen tools for me. I use them quite regularly and I will definitely be using them next month.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to it's purpose, but might I borrow it when you're done with it? <giggity gobble!!>

pie crust weights.

And we have a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I use dog chains for pie crust weights when blind baking a pastry shell. (That statement is not NEARLY as kinky as it sounds, if you know your way around a kitchen!!!)

Metal and ceramic pie weights, and also dry beans for that matter, tend to bounce and roll all over the kitchen when one lifts a parchment sling out of a partially baked pastry shell. Metal dog chains work just as well as any pie weights, and they have the good sense to stay together.

I use these chains all the time, when I bake a pie shell or a quiche shell. Uli-belle must not be around this weekend because I think she has actually seen these devices in action. I wish I could say that I thought this kitchen tool up all by myself, but actually I got the idea from Steve Fulton, who used to work for s@h. Steve is a highly accomplished home chef.

Honorable mention goes to the... ahem... "gentleman" (and I use the term liberally!!!) who pm'd me with "I don't know what you do with them, but I sure hope you wear black leather when you use them!" You know who you are, sir, and I'll have you know that the only black leather I own happens to be in the form of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes... and I don't tend to wear those in the kitchen!!!

Merciful heavens!!!

PM going out to our winner John now.

I'd say this game has gone over the hill now, and I'm outta here.

Sorry. I did not mean to offend. I will let our thread initiator clarify the rules, if necessary.

OK, what is it called, and what is it used for. This is similar to the one in my parents kitchen.

It's a child torture device to teach them not to touch the cook's buns. You put their hands in between the two metal pieces and press down as hard as you can.
