According to the Faily Wail, figures released yesterday show that out-of-work benefits have increased by 20% in the last 5 years, while salaries have risen by just 12% over the same period. This purports to make a bit of a nonsense of the government statement at the end of last year that it "should always pay to work". I'll have a closer look at the figures and see if it's media interpretation for a lurid headline. In an earlier statement & televised via Letterman, you stated that 1 million new jobs had been created - you forgot to mention that 87% of those were part time jobs of 10 hours or less - so another good "deal" for Britain then del-boy....... Can you point me at those figures? They seem somewhat different to the information that I have. If they are correct then yes, it does put a different interpretation upon the matter. What's the matter Taffy? Hit home did it? I really don't know why you keep banging on about my Welsh connection, it seems very childish to me. It is general knowledge that my parents were evacuated during WWII from London to Llangollen in North Wales where I was born at the end of the war. At 6 months old we returned to England where I have lived ever since. I basically come from English stock, but obviously I have a soft spot for that part of the UK which has magnificent scenery and a vibrant cultural heritage with an annual internationally famous Eisteddfod. However there is an Irish connection in the past. I went to Ireland a couple of years ago, and discovered that my Great Great Grandfather on my paternal side, was a lay preacher in County Mayo in the 1830's, before later settling in England. Whilst there we went down south from Mayo to Galway, a very nice city. I liked Ireland, the Guinness is good, and the climate was surprisingly warm being on the Atlantic. However I am basically English, and proud of it, and I think I'm a better ambassador for my country than you'll ever be for yours.

So guess it wold be completely out of line to have anyone who can while they collect unemployment do work to clean roads or pubic places or help the elderly clean yards weather strip houses dig ditches then fill them in and you know work? Not at all Dancer, that is what we have been trying to do for a long time. The problem that we have is that there is a hard core of long term unemployed, who are just scroungers, and have no intention of finding any sort of work, whether community or paid. It is compounded by them deliberately having loads of kids, so that they HAVE to have benefits for the kids sake. My way forward in these cases would be to take the kids into care, and chuck the layabout parents out on the street. But of course the BHL's amongst us would complain about abusing their human rights. People like that don't have any rights, they forwent them when they chose the lifestyle that they have. Work is a four letter word to too many people and it has to change.

I think the problem goes deeper than that. Take the building trade for example, there is a traditional "lump" workforce that still drifts from one job and site to another The lump. Quite often that work is just labouring or sweeping up, which full time employees on the books see as beneath them. If they tightened up this black economy would disappear, and building would cost more.

I believe it was Panorama that highlighted that, as well as pointing out that the Civil Service were witholding their own vacancies from showing up on the system. Not one of the CS staff that were interviewed explained that sufficiently to avoid being tagged as "keeping the jobs for their own". What's the matter Taffy? Hit home did it? You stop the social engineering & Ill stop calling you Taffy. BTW, it was the English that named us Jocks, Taffy's & Paddy's with their constant jokes regarding other nationalities & you don't like it up you when the shoe is on the other foot.... ..nothing new then from the English ambassadors. "Quite what links you have to Canada we will await with baited breath to learn." I'm waiting with bated breath to know the reason why you want personal info. ____________

& you don't like it up you when the shoe is on the other foot.... Oh dear, Corporal Jones the 2nd ;-) I'm waiting with bated breath to know the reason why you want personal info. Paraphrasing others posts isn't very clever. I have no particular interest in your Canadian connections, I just thought it innocuous. I probably have more links to Canada than you have. My paternal Grandfather went to Canada for a couple of years, to seek his fortune in 1905-7, but never did get one. The claim to fame is that he was skinny dipping in a lake one day with a couple of mates, got seen and reported, and had to evade the Mounties by jumping a cattle boat and working his passage back to England. He always reckoned until he died that he was still on their wanted list, and proud of it! In 1957 two Canadian Scouts from Vancouver were billeted with us in London for the Jamboree in Sutton Coldfield, and we are still in touch with the family. Two other recent friends also now live there as well. In addition, my Step Sister lives on Vancouver Island, and I have every intention of visiting there in the next couple of years.

OK I withdraw the question. Not interested anymore. Can we move on please. That only works when the questions are verbal. It seems that successive governments always seem to hit "captive markets". For years they've been trying to reduce traffic on our roads & seduce us all into using public transport...... .....& this is the results! ____________

It's absolutely sad that those that show/speak about their concerns for this country are either ignored/ridiculed or worse, classed as a racist by muppets in ivory towers......

Africa as a continent has sucked in many over the centuries & it seems it will continue to do so..... I'm giving no credit at all to the morons that read the dailys and believe every word! So can you give an answer to that belief, seeing as how Del-boy has pushed it back to 2017? So, how would you describe this years posts of yours, constantly calling the democratically elected government a bunch of muppets, with their noses in the trough? Fair point, so you won't mind if I stop calling them Muppets but Billy Liar's instead. ____________
