North Africa?

Not Africa.

Next hint: the location was first fortified by one of the oldest recorded civilizations on the planet.

Phoenicia or Sumeria? Which would be modern Lebanon or Asian Turkey?
Or maybe Babylon/Iraq?

Celt Tooth: I'm not sure of the official definition of the Middle East but you are at least getting warm and maybe are right on.

Donald: one of the places in your list is correct.

Tullio: the Crusaders never made it this far (I think). This was definitely not the final goal of the Crusaders, or even on the route they usually took.

Next hint: the modern country where this is located is on the fringe of several recent (and one current) conflicts in what the modern press calls the Middle East.

Close enough. The locals call it the Ankara Citadel. The first fortifications on this site were built by the Hittites.

PM going out.

Ooolala.

What is the hill pictured in the background? The fence is a standard height barbed wire fence.

Since it's rather vague here's a hint or two:
1. Located somewhere in the south US.
2. The hill is part of a series of similar structures, all man made.

Nope, these are quite old. To be more precise some were thought to have been formed around 1200 years ago.

Caddo Mounds site, a Texas Historical Commission property, located in Cherokee County, west of Nacogdoches?

Edit, added: To be exact, it is what's called Mound A, at the Caddo Mounds site.

Correct in every detail. You're up!

That stepped steeple looks like a lot of RC churchs in Eastern Canada, c.1900, but I can't find one with the two floors of windows.

Canadian RC church, c 1900?

Not Europe, not RC, not eastern Canada.
Hint, Canada, built pre 1900.
