so why SETI doesnt get a copy of all these data and process them to check if any alien signals in it? :P Transport charges/logistics could be 1 reason. Cheers. |

so why SETI doesnt get a copy of all these data and process them to check if any alien signals in it? :P Someone would have to "pay" for the data to be copied, a fund raiser has just been held to purchase the HDD's and transport case necessary for getting data from Green Bank. No one has mentioned who will actually pay for these HDD's to get from Green Bank and back. Remember SETI@Home has no money to pay for this sort of thing and would have to rely on the ASKAP to donate everything. |

Maybe GPUUG could make initial contact with them & see what is possible. It would take a lot of work off S@H regarding their radar blanking as it's "radio-quiet". |

Another reason is that satellite time costs money. SETI@Home gets a free ride off anyone paying for the Arecibo satellite - anytime someone rents the satellite, the SETI@Home data recorder is running to collect data. SETI@Home is not likely to get the same deal from other telescope arrays. This means they would have to pay for observation time, which we all know SETI@Home has little to no money to pay for. Many donors are happy to give money for hardware upgrades or donate hardware directly, but it seems very few people are willing to donate the cash required to pay the SETI@Home staff or observation time on the satellites. |

Actually, you'll still need observation time to double-check any potential signals. But most of the world doesn't allow for "free rides". Arecibo may be a special deal. If they can get that deal with another satellite provider, then all the better for SETI@Home, but it shouldn't be expected to have a free ride. |

That's why I suggested an initial contact. My view is: - "Don't ask, don't get". |
