I know what a civil war can be. I was sent as a boy to buy bread in a mountain village where we had escaped from the Allied bombings of Trieste while Fascists in the bell tower and partisans in the mountain were shooting at each other. I was sent because, as a boy, I risked less than my father, who had fought with the Alpine Corps in Russia and had refused to join the Fascist army. So he was in danger both from the Fascist side and the partisans side because he had not joined them. His life was much linked to a roulette.

My own history is not so graphic.
But, my grandparents came to this country as escapees from an opressive German republic.
They came here to escape what was then a very bleak future in the motherland.
There was no hope for them there any longer.
So they came to this country in hope for a better future.
I stand here today to confess that they did indeed find it.
I am one of their offspring, telling you this here and now.
I live in the house that Grandpa built.
Not figuratively, but literally.
Every stone and brick I can hold in my hand was laid by my father's father.

I think that a civil war is a war fought by people of the same nationality, like the American Civil War or the fighting between Italian partisans and Italian Fascists in 1943-45. I don't think this was the case of Ireland.

Incorrect. That was a rebellion. The Irish Civil War was 1921/22.

Sten-Arne your Sweedish.......hmmmmmmm...come to think of it, i wonder did your ancestors head down toward Ireland there about a thousand years ago in Long Boats. We have many reports of guys invading our Island about a thousand years ago and they were all wearing helmets with horns? Was that you by any chance? Or i suppose you will blame the Norwegians....LOL

Hmmmn, it looks like you haven't read the Book of Invasions properly. They were the Vikings from Norway, & it was 1300 years ago.

It was not me, or my Swedish roots. It was indeed the Norwegians, but then again, my mother was born in Norway :-)
