We did raise a glass to all who weren't able to make it.
It has (just about) stopped raining here, but the fields are showing why you should never build in a flood plain - even the Dutch get it wrong from time to time, and we ain't the Dutch.

The Dutch built some good dams to protect themselves as the whole country lies beneath the sea level.

The grey-clad submariner notices the addition of a large fireplace in a far corner of the Establishment. It bears a striking resemblence to the one he remembers from Mike Callaghan's Place, complete with chalk line four paces from the hearth.
Stepping to the line, and accepting a shot of his favorite Single-Malt from the waiting koala, he proposes a toast:
"To all our Departed Friends, Shipmates, and Comrades - may they Rest in Peace until we join them. And to all the Living, may this New Year bring Good Health and Good Fortune, and be better than the last."
Downing his drink, he hurls the glass into the far corner of the fireplace, which, previously cold, erupts into a roaring blaze sufficient to drive away the winter cold and banish any ill-will or misfortune.

And a very nice toast.

Ah, we're back!
Thank you. I've long been a fan of Spider Robinson's writing, and have almost all of his Callaghan's stories in my library. In the 1990s I was a regular in the Usenet newsgroup alt.callaghans, which I believe is still active as a Googlegroup. In retrospect, at that time in my life I needed a place like that, and I hope I gave as much help as I got there.
The purpose of the fireplace was to toast the accomplishments of the living, honor the dead, and ask for prayers and good thoughts for the ill and injured. We've tried to establish a "Callaghan's Crosstime Saloon" thread here several times, but it always disappears after awhile. I hope incorporating Mike Callaghan's fireplace into Rocky's Cafe will serve the same purposes for the patrons of this august establishment.
