The corrupt Japanese whaler's despicable saga continues for yet another year:

Japanese Whalers Preparing For Their Last Stand in Antarctica

... Sea Shepherd has had the whaling fleet under observation and the vessels are being prepared and outfitted to return to the Southern Ocean. The Japanese Fishery Agency has secured funding for the next season, but all the signs suggest that the whalers will not be able to survive another season of losses if Sea Shepherd obstructs their operations one more time. This season will mark the ninth year we have challenged the Japanese whalers on the high seas.

"We now have four ships, an international crew of 120 volunteers...

... "They will be quite humiliated, so it really is in their best interest to not return because I am absolutely confident that Sea Shepherd's Operation Zero Tolerance will ensure they will not kill a single whale."

Is the Japanese whaling corruption and blind childish stubbornness and contemptuous indifference to the world and the rest of the world so deep and blind that they need another Hiroshima and Nagasaki to forcibly humiliate them to see any good sense and reason?

Is there only Sea Shepherd to defend our planet against such senseless cruel corruption?

All hands on deck!

Looks like Sea Shepherd have disrupted the Japanese whalers surprisingly effectively:

Japanese Whalers Confirm Sea Shepherd's Effectiveness

The New York Times reported on October 2nd that the Institute for Cetacean Research, the government-owned operation that manages the Japanese Whaling fleet, has confirmed that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society cost the whalers $20.5 million in losses for the 2010-2011 whaling season in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

Last season saw the whalers taking only 26% of their kill quota. The season before, the whalers were able to take only 17% due to Sea Shepherd interference. ...

... Last season saw the whalers sink further into debt as they continue to operate solely on massive government subsidies, including some 30 million U.S. dollars from the Japanese Tsunami Relief Fund.

The reality is that the Japanese whaling fleet is in a poor state of operations. ...

Some of the silliness for all that can be found on the older thread:

Japan Whale Slaughter 2011 - 2012

And in all mindless corrupt belligerence, yet still the Japanese look to be getting ready to sail into world wide opprobrium, yet again.

The cruel race begins:

Sea Shepherd at the Heart of a Japanese Scandal

... the Japanese media reported that the whalers lost $20.5 million dollars USD last season because of Sea Shepherd interventions. This story was also reported in The New York Times and in the current edition of Newsweek.

This week, The Yomiuri Shimbun is reporting that the allocation of monies from the Great East Japan Earthquake Relief Fund towards non-disaster-related expenses is finally causing a political scandal in Japan.

A year ago when Captain Paul Watson publicly exposed the fact that some $30 million dollars had been allocated from the Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund specifically to oppose the operations of Sea Shepherd...

... The whaler's factory ship, Nisshin Maru, is now in drydock in Hiroshima being upgraded at enormous public expense. Meanwhile, four Sea Shepherd ships are waiting in the South Pacific to once again intervene against this scandal-ridden industry...

Sea Shepherd Launches Operation Zero Tolerance

... "The plan is for our fleet to meet the whaling fleet in the North Pacific off Japan. We are planning to take the battle pretty much up to Japan itself. We are keeping the location and identity of our new vessel, the SSS Sam Simon, a secret in the hope that the first time the whalers see the Sam, is when she comes into view on the slipway of the factory processing ship, the Nisshin Maru, effectively shutting down their illegal whaling operations."...

... "This is our strongest fleet to date, with four ships and more than 100 international crew representing 23 nations to defend the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Operation Zero Tolerance will be Sea Shepherd's best-equipped and most effective campaign to date. This is a defining moment in Sea Shepherd's history; we have no tolerance for whale poachers. Our objective this year is 100%. We are going to try and intercept them as quickly as possible, and try to make this the first year they get zero kills."...

The race is on...

The bogus charges and legal ensnarement aided and abetted incredibly by GERMANY continues: The legal saga continues

Meanwhile, the date has come for Sea Shepherd to set sail:

A Long Journey Home and Now The Voyage Begins

... a wonderful week indeed because I received the best of all possible gifts. The deck of the Steve Irwin is again under my feet. I have an awesome crew and our ship is on course for Antarctica.

It has been a long journey from Germany to where I am now. ...

... Our ships and our crew are on the move. The Steve Irwin and I are at sea. The Bob Barker left on November 30th from Sydney. The Brigitte Bardot is also at sea and the Sam Simon remains in an undisclosed location amidst rumors and speculations as to what and where it is. ...

... Four ships with four captains and officers and crew, 120 people from 24 nations...

... The objective of Operation Zero Tolerance is to intercept and intervene against the intent of the Japanese whaling fleet to murder 1,035 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Our purpose is twofold: to save the lives of whales and to cost the Japanese whaling industry as much as we possibly can in financial losses. Last year, we cost them roughly $22 million U.S. dollars despite the fact that they received a $30 million dollar subsidy stolen from the victims of the Japanese Tsunami Relief Fund.

And as always, our actions are undertaken in the Buddhist spirit of Hayagriva, where we do not cause physical injury to our opponents. We target their intentions and thwart their lethal ambitions, but we never harm them. ...

... Whaling is becoming unpopular in Japan. Only a few years ago, the Japanese whaling fleet would depart from the dock with cheering crowds, bands, ribbons and widespread media coverage.

They departed this week from an obscure location, without fanfare; shamefully sneaking out to sea for fear that we would see them. ...

... A special thank you to all of you who have donated to Sea Shepherd and made it possible for our ships to be where we are now. We still need your help to refuel the vessels to allow us to keep our stations down here at the bottom of the planet as the guardians of the great whales. ...

And for quite a sweet twist of affairs:

(See the YouTube video)

The SSS Sam Simon is Unveiled in Hobart, Tasmania

After months of speculation, anticipation and ... Sea Shepherd's new Antarctic patrol ship, the SSS Sam Simon, was unveiled today in the port of Hobart, Tasmania, docked at Macquarie Wharf 1.

[...]

The vessel, retired from service by the Japanese Government in 2010, has since been laid up in Shimonoseki, Japan, alongside the very ships Sea Shepherd will confront this season.

Originally built as Seifu Maru in 1993 by IHI shipyard in Tokyo, to a high standard with no expense spared by the Japanese Government, the ice-strengthened steel vessel was operated by the Maizuru Meteorogical Observatory, a department of the Japan Meteorological Agency, out of Kyoto Prefecture.

... “After months of secrecy, it is such a great feeling to finally be able to fly the Sea Shepherd flag from the main mast, and yes, Sea Shepherd now owns a real Japanese research ship!” ...

A poetic turnaround indeed!

Here's wishing them success, and enough fuel to drive that success!

... “After months of secrecy, it is such a great feeling to finally be able to fly the Sea Shepherd flag from the main mast, and yes, Sea Shepherd now owns a real Japanese research ship!” ...

A poetic turnaround indeed!

A good summary is given by The Guardian:

Sea Shepherd buys anti-whaling ship from Japan

... The marine conservation group Sea Shepherd has scored a propaganda victory over Japan after it emerged it had bought its newest anti-whaling vessel from the Japanese government...

... To compound Japan's embarrassment, the 184ft vessel was previously moored in Shimonoseki, home to the country's Antarctic whaling fleet, after being retired by the meteorological agency in 2010.

In its past incarnation as the Seifu Maru, the ice-strengthened vessel's duties included gathering data on ocean currents for Japan's north Pacific whaling fleet, according to Sea Shepherd.

The group has pursued Japan's whalers across the icy waters of the Southern Ocean every winter since 2005. ...

Sea Shepherd in the news... Quite a good lead up to hopefully zero kills:

The Japan Times: Sea Shepherd seeks to intercept whalers closer to Japan

Hardline eco-warriors hope extreme tactics end Antarctic hunts for good

... but for the first time, the controversial conservation group is sending four ships and planning to intercept the whalers near Japanese waters. ...

[...]

"... We want these animals to be free and to live. We would love to end this campaign this year; we would love it to be our last year in the Southern Ocean. And that's what we're going for."

Japan Daily Press: Sea Shepherd’s Watson says he’s ready for arrest attempt from Japan

... MacLean says that Watson is prepared for whatever the outcome may be, otherwise he wouldn’t be leading Operation Zero Tolerance.

When asked if the Sea Shepherd crew was prepared to defend Watson with the use of force, MacLean responded that in their 35 years of activity, they have never hurt anyone, and the organization will maintain its record of non-violent direct action. Watson and the group continue to insist he is innocent of criminal charges from both Costa Rica and Japan, for which he was arrested in Germany. ...

Further Japan Daily Press stories for Sea Shepherd

The Mercury: Protest vessel draws a crowd

... hundreds of Tasmanians and tourists alike climbed aboard the Sea Shepherd's Sam Simon vessel.

The ship is the newest in the Sea Shepherd fleet and will be heading into the Southern Ocean any day to meet the Japanese whaling fleet, but over the weekend the gangplank was down to allow the public to explore its decks. ...

What an utterly stark contrast to the secretive sneaking around by the Japanese whalers... And all for what?...

Japan Daily Press: Japan to push wider sales of whale meat to make up financial losses

... Spiked with controversy, Japan’s yearly whale hunt in the Antarctic costs around $60 million, and with 75% of last year’s catch going unsold, that is quite a bit of money lost. ...

The little ruse about Sea Shepherd meeting them near Japan had the whalers secretly skulking out of port without fanfare and unannounced. Quite an ignoble and dishonorable start to a cruel unnecessary crusade against nature.

Sea Shepherd in the news... Hopefully for zero kills:

Japan denies problem despite whale hunt delay

... The factory ship, Nisshin Maru, returned to the port of Innoshima on Thursday following what is believed to have been sea trials after a refit, Greenpeace said.

Nisshin Maru is more than a month past its usual departure date. Activists calculate it cannot reach the Antarctic until mid-January at the earliest, for a season that winds up in mid-March.

Japan's consul-general in Melbourne, Hidenobu Sobashima, on Friday reaffirmed the government's practice of refusing to comment on the fleet's movements.

But Mr Sobashima told Fairfax Media: "Yes, the government of Japan has made an announcement that research whaling would be conducted this season." ...

Sea Shepherd Invites Concerned Nations to Witness Activities in Southern Ocean

In response to recent reports stating concern by Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United States over potential conflicts in the Southern Ocean between Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Japan’s whaling fleet, Sea Shepherd would like to invite Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United States to send a representative to join the Sea Shepherd ships at sea to witness first-hand the “incidents” about which they have concern. ...

The little ruse about Sea Shepherd meeting them near Japan had the whalers secretly skulking out of port without fanfare and unannounced. Quite an ignoble and dishonorable start to a cruel unnecessary crusade against nature.

Is it now the Japanese whalers playing games whilst Sea Shepherd are all at sea, ready and waiting to intercept?

Unfortunately, not so:

Japan's whaling fleet set for Antarctica

... "Today was virtually the last day when they could leave for the Antarctic Sea," he said, adding that the fisheries agency had announced that the departure would take place within this month.

The mother ship would join the three vessels that left Shimonoseki earlier in the day, Kyodo said.

The fleet plans to hunt up to 935 Antarctic minke whales and up to 50 fin whales through March, the fisheries agency said earlier.

Japanese authorities refused to confirm either departure to AFP.

"We do not disclose when the vessels leave or left for safety reasons," said an agency official said. ...

Despite the wording in that article, note that Greenpeace have nothing to do with Sea Shepherd and for saving whales. Greenpeace follows a very different and appeasing approach that has been shrugged off as insignificant for years...

And the Japanese whaling murderous silliness is all very corrupt:

World still waits for Japan to stop being apathetic about whaling

... in what appears to be a desperate attempt to get rid of its huge and expensively stored stockpile and raise badly needed funds to cover the losses made by the whaling project.

It will also increase the amount of whale meat it distributes to schools. Perhaps children — who generally still do what they're told and eat what they're given — are the government's only real hope. Japan's "research whaling" project, whereby the Fisheries Agency, which exploits a loophole in the global moratorium on commercial whaling, costs the government ¥4.5 billion to ¥5 billion per year.

According the IFAW figures, eco-friendly whale watching generates $2.1 billion (Â¥173 billion) for Japan's coastal communities. Everyone knows that no useful scientific data is gathered in the whale hunt. Even in cold economic terms, it seems more profitable to watch cetaceans than to kill them. ...

That looks all very corrupt...

Sea Shepherd ready to fight

... Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic.

The multinational crew of 24 is expected to head off in the next week.

Sam Simon captain Luis Pinho said yesterday the Sea Shepherd fleet, including the four ships the Steve Irwin, Bob Barker, Brigitte Bardot and Sam Simon and a helicopter, two drones and 120 crew, would launch their toughest campaign yet.

"They defy one of the world's only successful global agreements for conservation, offend any concept of decency, and so sadly and unnecessarily mar Japan's international reputation," he said.

What more is there to be said before facing up to Japanese blind arrogant belligerence and corruption? A New Zealand press article suggests that the only next step is to escalate to an act of war for the Japanese trespass into New Zealand and Australian waters...

as deep as the japanese people are willing to let it go

And while I support stopping whaling, corruption with tsunami relief funds

should see all funds seace until all politicians involved are charged and on the

way to receiving jail time, heads will spin as to how fast this can happen

if the money stops.

As the Japanese whalers sail on deeper into their despicable unwholesome senselessness, there's comment from Australia:

Australia launches whale photo database

... Environment Minister Tony Burke announced details of the database during his recent trip to Antarctica.

And he says the approach stands in contrast to Japan's scientific whaling program.

"To conduct scientific research, you don't need to harpoon a whale, chop it up and sell it for food," Mr Burke said. ...

... The new data will be given to the International Whaling Commission.

‘Nothing Scientific’ About Japanese Whale Hunt, Australia Says

... “The Australian Government condemns all commercial whaling, including Japan’s so-called ‘scientific’ whaling. It is particularly offensive that Japan’s whaling will take place in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary established by the International Whaling Commission,” Burke said. ...

... The [Japanese] fleet will hunt whales along with the main ship, the Nisshin Maru, to catch as many as 1,000 whales until March, including 935 Antarctic minke whales and up to 50 fin whales.

“There is nothing scientific about going out and chasing whales, aiming a harpoon at them, so that you can pull them in and chop them up for food,” ...

As the Japanese whalers sail on deeper into their despicable unwholesome senselessness, there's comment from Australia: ...

Is the loss-making whaling really just a despicable distraction from another selfishly corrupt cruelty?

Japan bluefin tuna fetches record $1.7m

A single bluefin tuna has sold in Japan for 155m yen ($1.7m; £1.05m), almost triple the record price set last year. ...

... Japan consumes more than half of the world's bluefin catch.

New figures to be released on Monday are expected to show a continued decline in Pacific bluefin stocks.

Amanda Nickson, of the Pew Environmental Group's global tuna conservation campaign, told Associated Press news agency: "Everything we're hearing is that there's no good news for the Pacific bluefin. We're seeing a very high value fish continue to be overfished."

All very stupidly encouraged by the economics of extinction. However, once the tuna are no more, they are forever no more for everyone, not only the Japanese.

Captain Paul Watson hangs up his sea dog sou'wester and sadly steps down.

Despite a rather biased and unfair ruling, Sea Shepherd obeys the law. Note how in corrupt contrast, the Japanese whalers are operating in brazen violation of the courts:

Statement from Captain Paul Watson

For the 35 years since I founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society I have strived to act non-violently and within the boundaries of the law.

Sea Shepherd has never been a protest organization nor have we engaged in civil disobedience. We are an anti-poaching organization established to uphold international conservation law. ...

"Counsel, that is so disingenuous," Smith said.

Amazing, committing perjury in an appellate court. Must be a good way to win converts.

That is an incredible exchange and highly damning against the judges. That just must go to appeal again...

I wonder if there were scheming ways that the Japanese exploited to manoeuvre that one!

Whichever way you look at it for this case, it drags America into a very unsavory light along with the apologist Germany...

Here's a little introspection and history whilst waiting to see the corrupt cruel colours of the Japanese whalers:

What I learned the day a dying whale spared my life

It was 1975, Greenpeace's first campaign, and the bodies of six Soviet-slaughtered whales were lying lifeless in the swell. I thought to myself, is humanity really this insane?

... We had practiced what we would do for over a year and I turned to Bob Hunter, our expedition leader, who was in the boat with me, and said, "Well Bob, this is it. Let's do it." ...

... Would the Soviets risk killing a human being to slay a whale? The answer to that question was a mystery to us.

But we were tempting them to give us an answer one way or another. As our three inflatable boats raced before the bow, I looked back to see an ape of a man stooping behind the massive harpoon cannon, trying to get one of the whales in his sight. He was not succeeding, and was clearly frustrated.

Suddenly a larger man came storming forward along the catwalk and began yelling into the ear of the Soviet harpooner. ...

[...]

Captain Paul Watson is a co-founder of the Greenpeace Foundation and the founder in 1977 of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He is currently on board the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin intervening against the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary by the Japanese whaling fleet

All is quiet before the soon to unfold storm of confrontation on the high seas. Here's wishing Sea Shepherd a speedy intercept and a speedy positive resolution to the unpalatable Japanese whaling farce.

Some contrasting views on the Japanese whaling run down:

The Politics of Whaling

Whales now are threatened by both whaling and the general decline of the global ecosystem. As far as Japan is concerned, however, the whaling industry itself had become unsustainable by the late 1970s. Today, the demand for whale and dolphin meat within Japan remains low and stagnant. ...

... These signs point to the Abe administration continuing a strong pro-whaling position.

However, I think there could be a slight – very slight – possibility that the Abe government might choose to move toward an entirely opposite policy: the end of so-called research whaling (while continuing coastal whaling), in order to appease not only the United States but also the European Union, Australia and New Zealand. Judging by the political, diplomatic, military and strategic situations Japan currently faces, especially in its relationship with China, it is possible that Tokyo could feel it is necessary to cement bilateral and multilateral relations with Western allies in this way. Because the general public in Japan does not consider whaling a major issue, a drastic shift in whaling policy could be a cheap, safe and a fairly effective bargaining chip.

Younger generations of Japanese are speaking out against whaling

Recently, a newly formed Japanese grassroots group marched in protest against its country's whaling policies. It was the first open resistance from within Japan itself. ...

... The march was both coordinated and peaceful until a group of around 30 Nationalists appeared at the demonstration to protest the protesters. Seeking to impose their own views, Nationalists attempted to disrupt the march by screaming ''Go Home!", and even in some cases, spitting on the participants rallying for the dolphins and whales. ...

... When we think deeply about dolphin and whale hunting done by Japan, the main cause seems to be from handful of fishermen or hunters, but really the fundamental causes are ignorance and indifference of Japanese citizens and the Japanese government.

Regarding the ignorance and indifference of Japanese citizens, we can see the bright side when we hear peoples' reactions to dolphin hunting in Japan. Many peoples' reactions are "unbelievable ... unforgivable ... so cruel ... wasting of our tax money", etc., we take this as a huge potential for mind shift of Japanese people.

Our toughest issue is how to take action or protest to Japanese government effectively. ...

Sam Simon steams south

... "The Japanese whaling fleet are across the equator, heading south to illegally kill whales in a global whale sanctuary."

Dr Brown is directing this season's Antarctic whale defence campaign after his long-time friend and Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson stepped down from the role because of international legal action against him [instigated by the Japanese whalers].

In my own personal view: There can only be cruel corruption keeping the Japanese whalers afloat for the profit of others somewhere... At the expense of our planet and everyone else.

How deep does the Japanese corruption run?
