For a couple of days I have serious connection problems. First I had v. 6.10 running and now 7.0.28. I had hundreds of DL's in the pipeline, but none even began (and this went on for several days). I tried to abort and get new ones yesterday (after installing v.7), with the same result. Beforehand everything went just fine and I didn't change anything on the client. Other projects run smoothly without any issues. I have now - with SETI unavailable for me - given Einstein my CUDA power. Thanks Thomas |

I have still been building kibble stores. 9 rigs all getting kibbles. I think they have filled to the brim. Work has never been more available than at present. Would be good to know what is wrong... Client tries to DL WU's, but eventually fails and message says that internet access is OK (obviously) but project servers may be temporarily down. Today I even tried to "reset": Disconnect from the project (thereby resetting all old WU's), then re-connect. Same results. Gets a couple of WU's, but DL is stuck and eventually the "internet access is OK" message comes. I already deactivated Antivirus and Firewall with no positive result. Well, at least all other projects do what they're supposed to do... :/ |

Mowo, have u modified your windows "hosts" file in the past to specific download servers? - Performance is not a simple linear function of the number of CPUs you throw at the problem. - |

Highlander, Thanks for asisting :) Mowo, have u modified your windows "hosts" file in the past to specific download servers? No, I haven't modified the file (or any other). Months ago I experimented with defining a proxy, but since it didn't bring any performance improvements, have disabled that for long now. The download problem came unannounced and without any interaction on my part. At first I wondered a bit about the many files waiting to be downloaded, but since it had happened in the past and got straight by itself eventually I thought it would do so now as well. But since now it is unusually long, I am wondering about the reason. EDIT: Now, as you mention it, I seem to remember I had modified it (though forgotten the path), but that was really long ago. Could it be that these entries there are now no longer valid due to a change at SETI? If so, could you point me to the file (and the correct settings) so that I might check? |

Mowo I'd first make sure you don't have any proxy settings running. Then check to make sure your internet speeds are decent (I'm sure they are). If you're worried about old settings it may be easiest for you to just grab a fresh copy of Boinc and your applicable files and start from there. I'm running stock 6.10.60 using Jason's 41x and I'm getting lightning fast downloads, 50-190 MB tasks per request. I picked up around 1000 tasks today in around an hour. At any rate keep us updated. We'll get you sorted out :) Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Why is it that I seem to be the only one with no problems? None. Zero. Zilch. Zed. I have 9 rigs. None have anything special going on. Just hard ahead crunchers. done for the night Seeya. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Could it be that these entries there are now no longer valid due to a change at SETI? Yes, indeed, the (some) server addresses have changed. The file in question is C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Gruß, Gundolf |

That did it. That's what happens when you edit a file and then forgetting about it and its meanings... Thanks a lot. now everything's up and running again :) |

These are the entries in my "hosts" file 208.68.240.13 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu # S@H Download Server 208.68.240.18 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu # S@H Download Server 208.68.240.16 setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu # S@H Upload Server 208.68.240.20 setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu # S@H Scheduling Server Does anything need changing ? Could it be that these entries there are now no longer valid due to a change at SETI? If your ISP has a reasonably reliable DNS server, you should comment all those out *except* during a failure episode when some special handling is needed. Usually, that would mean locking downloads to one of the round-robin pair, if the other was known to be having problems. I'm not sure exactly what the defined behaviour is when the same url is listed twice in a hosts file, but I suspect you may have locked downloads to 208.68.240.13 ('slow but steady') only, and - conveniently - bypassed 208.68.240.18 ('now withdrawn from service') completely. If you want to be ready for the next breakdown, replace 208.68.240.18 with 208.68.240.21 - but comment it out. |

I reckon if anyone doesn't have enough work then the problem is on their end. Wish I could work out what -- I'm only getting two tasks/request on my fastest machine and not much more on the others, in general. |

Batten the hatches folks. Smooth sailing is over. AP's are being split again. Expect lots of complaints about slow downloads, no new tasks, can't report, slow uploads, no more coffee, bad times in general. :-) What's odd is that the Cricket graph has not maxxed back out yet. Normally see that as soon as AP cranks back up. Maybe things were going good enough over the weekend that many MB caches are full. I know the kitties got about everything they needed. Usually AP datasets take a long time to split and send. I suspect little AP work was generated from these few. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I reckon if anyone doesn't have enough work then the problem is on their end. Gah! Finally realised that my disk usage was 1.5 GB, hitting the limit; upped it to 10 GB and jobs started flowing... Turns out that when I was playing with BOINC versions in August I'd screwed up and "lost" 3000 WUs, which were reported as errors but not deleted from my project area! |
