Looks like this waz a good time to BSOD my main cruncher to death and do a full reinstall of everything the slow way to try and fix this windge7 homeless crash test dummy.

Up/down loads, easy, good speeds, lots of work,

No problems with the Scheduler, other than actually getting some work. But now the uploads are even worse than they were, only one or 2 getting through every 10 min.
Bit of a problem as i'm processing 10 or more in that 10 minutes with all the shorties still in my cache. And a lot of the new stuff has still been shorties.

However, we have had a very long run without any shorties, so i guess we were due.

*sigh*
Now even Scheduler requests are starting to time out, more & more often.
*deeper sigh*

Hello guys,

Perhaps it might be interesting to let readers out here know if anyone of you guys in here is in touch with the SETI staff? Has anyone got a clue as to what is going on really? This situation has been going on for some time now, yet still not a single posting from the SETI staff, telling that at least they know about it, or at best saying they're fixing it IF there is a technical problem that is. I know of course they're very busy, but it would be nice to read a little statement from time to time.

Kind regards to all starving fellow crunchers out there ;)

I refer you to this posted by Matt on 26th July

It's no real surprise given financial constraints we're operating with a minimal crew here at the lab. In fact, I'm down to working just above half time on average. Lucky for me, though, these hard times coincide with my music career exploding.

I suspect Matt is not around and probably the only thing being done is the weekly backup. There may be lots of new servers but it would seem that there is not enough to pay for the staffing. And of course lots of new servers should need less maintenance so you can cut back further on staff.

Seti is really dead in the water now...

No uploads,
No downloads,
Server time-outs
"Retry" abuse

Guess I'll give up and let it run it's course. Hope it's fixed in 4 days or so when my main rig runs out of work.

true. Only question rises here : bottom line we're not in this for the RAC but to find E.T. so if there's no staff around who's going to identify the candidates. I know a computer can do a lot, but the really interesting signals do need to be sorted out by a human mind instead of a CPU...

Just saying !

I agree but I don't believe Nitpicker has been run for many weeks, I have seen no results posted. As I have said before someone with contacts in the Labs need to find out exactly what the situation is. What if anything can we the users do to help. Donation drives are fine, but isn't it time someone from the Lab made some sort of statement. There are lots of us wanting to know the exact situation.

Also of course we are somewhat to blame bigger and faster crunchers demanding more and more work, can the system keep up, what are the exact figures for work loads compared with say a year ago?

I have recently been planning to replace my collection of older crunchers with one "super cruncher" there is not much point if these problems continue.

Perhaps a minor suggestion... There are many highly capable folks around here: perhaps they can offer their services to Matt & his team: LOGMEIN is a great way (very user friendly) to connect remotely to computers (& servers as well) and see what is going on ... If it's server related or not. Of course that would have to be set up very carefully, guided by Matt and his team: what can be fiddled with and what not. I don't know if these kind of talks have ever been done, but if SETI is that much in financial trouble cutting on staff permanently, it might be a great way to offer some 'remote' assistance ...

Kind regards.

Finding ET comes first indeed, not RAC... ;)

Which the staff often do.
Hoewever, often problems occur that can't be sorted out remotely & require people onsite.

However seeing as how last weeks problems were not fixed till the weekly backup, and no explanation was forthcoming, my feeling is there is no one there who knows what is happening, so they won't be logging in or posting info.

Linux/Boinc 7.0.28/7 day cache. I'm out of CPU work and not many GPU left. The PC have been running since January, so the current SETI problem is bigger than for a long time, at least for me.

My laptop has a good supply of workunits (partly because I have to set it to maintain a 3-day supply in order to get any workunits at all), but one of my desktops has none from SETI@Home and the other has only one for which it has been trying to download a file for many hours.

9/30/2012 6:07:08 AM | SETI@home | Started download of 27my12af.21823.1040.9.10.178
9/30/2012 6:09:10 AM | SETI@home | Temporarily failed download of 27my12af.21823.1040.9.10.178: transient HTTP error
9/30/2012 6:09:10 AM | SETI@home | Backing off 5 hr 54 min 53 sec on download of 27my12af.21823.1040.9.10.178

Is there any way I can transfer workunits from the laptop to one or both of the desktops?

I suspect that the failing download is blocking that computer from even requesting any more SETI@Home workunits.

All three computers are also connected to a number of other BOINC projects, so it isn't likely that any of them will run out of anything to do.

Don't worry about your cruncher, this is a global problem, the server is currently not behaving itself and very few requests are being serviced in an acceptable timescale.
