I have been running BOINC for several weeks now and when the screen saver comes on it shows I have over 6000 credits, but when I log into my account it says I have no credits and I can't even create a profile. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

A couple questions and observations.
Have you just started using a new computer?
- Your account is quite an old one, but there is no computer logged against it

Have you changed your email address?
- Logging a new email address and then creating a new account will cause the sort of problem you have described.

There has been a server glitch and your account details have "gone for a walk".

Probably a few more causes lurking around out there, but these are the ones that I thought of first.

(I think you have to have a functioning computer, and be generating credits on that computer, before you can create a profile - try getting your computer to connect to S@H, run a few tasks before you re-try creating a profile)

computer is working fine and I have over 6500 credits. I did start a account in 1999. This is a new PC and it shows up under my account.

Your computer DOES NOT show up on the SETI at home list linkked from the user name you are currently using, indeed NO computers are listed on SETI at Home against your current user name.
You may have had an account under another, but the two accounts are not linked.

Yes, with an account that you have accidentally created when adding your new computer:
Name Team Average credit	Total credit	Country Joined
MrT (ID 9774426)Grand Valley State University	351.73 6,745 United States	11 Sep 2012, 01:27:11 UTC

I did start a[n] account in 1999.

Yes, but you have no computers attached to that account:
Name Team Average credit	Total credit	Country Joined
MrT (ID 3309708)Grand Valley State University	000.00 0,000 United States	03 Apr 1999, 23:39:36 UTC

This is a new PC and it shows up under my account.

That should read: This is a new PC and it shows up under one of my accounts.

If you want to continue to use your old account (ID 3309708), you'll have to abandon your 6,745 credits and start over by removing your computer from the new account (ID 9774426) and adding it to the old account.

You probably have used another email address when adding your new computer. Since that address is the unique key, you've created a new account with the same name (MrT).

Gruß,
Gundolf

Since your old account appears to be never used for BOINC (= is SETI@home Classic account) you may be able to merge the two accounts.
!!! To be able to do this Do NOT add/attach any computers to your old account !
(because BOINC accounts can't be merged!)

* Log-out your old account (look top-right here) and Log-in your new account using your new email.

* Read and understand:
http://www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=65331
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=64442

* Follow the link ("Claim your SETI@home Classic workunits") in my posts (also available from HOME page)
and paste your old email. (the old email is written if you look in your old 'Joined: 3 Apr 99' account)
