http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/sep/19/veterans-bill-voted-down-us-senate?newsfeed=true Unemployment of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans is 11%. For veterans under 24 it's around 20%. Are they "leeches" or do they deserve better ? Are the GOP senators being "fiscally responsible" or just bloody minded. Seems that the US learned nothing from Vietnam. From its battle tactics to the treatment of its returned veterans. Your thoughts please. T.A. |

And seeing as how a republican sent them off to war I find it damn repugnant. Yeah, Lets blame the soldier who does the politicians dirty work. TA, We did learn a lesson from Viet Nam. And that lesson was for the public not to blame the soldier for fighting a war the Washington Buttheads wanted. Its to bad the Buttheads in DC dont get it. [/quote] Old James |

It is consistent with Teapublican ideology -- blame the victim. |

What is the public reaction to this in the US ? There has been nothing at all about it in the Australian news services. The only reporting of it I've seen is on line and the "Daily Show". T.A. |

If I was to post what I really think, i'd end up with a lengthy unallocated vacation. it's about time that all these muppets regardless of what side of the pond they reside in, be scooped up & put on the battlefield & let them resolve their political differences there, if they can. Military forces should only be used for defence of one's country & allies! |

I hadn't seen this reported much though I was aware of it. It did get coverage on MSNBC -- no surprise there. I've seen it reported on a batch of Facebook blogs as well. I guess it was filtered out by the 'lame stream' media. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/congress/republican-objections-to-spending-in-veterans-jobs-bill-blocks-election-year-legislation/2012/09/19/cd14cd0a-0279-11e2-9132-f2750cd65f97_story.html http://video.msnbc.msn.com/msnbc/49104601/#49104601 http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/09/19/13966931-senate-republicans-kill-veterans-jobs-bill?lite http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81151.html |

Guy, given the fact that the returning vets have an employment rate lower than the national average I suspect they have greater problems to overcome than the population at large. Now, what should be done about it, ignore the disparity or do something about it? |

Well the VA needs smart budgeting and management as much as they need more funding - I'll grant you that. In Arizona, the backlog for veterans making disability claims is ONE YEAR! They run apparently on a pure paper (no computers) system here in Arizona. |
