I’m thinking of building a Ivey system.

I’d be using it for Seti & GPU GRID including other Boinc projects, racing games. + everyday tasks
Heres what I’ve come up with

MB: ASUS MAXIMUS V GENE INTEL Z77
CPU: I7 3770K
RAM: PATRIOT VIPER XTREME 16GB (4X4GB) DDR3-1600 CL8 (PXQ316G1600LLQK)
GFX: ASUS GTX670-DC2-2GD5 GEFORCE GTX670 2GB
OS: 7 OEM Pro
SSD: INTEL 330 SERIES 120GB 2.5" SATA3 6GB/S SSD (SSDSC2CT120A3K5)
(OS /Boinc Drive)
HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX 1TB 64MB CACHE SATA3X2
PSU: CORSAIR AX750 GOLD PROFESSIONAL SERIES MODULAR
$2,719.56NZ/$2,210.46 USD

Only thing I’m missing is a case any recommendations? Would an after market cooler for CPU be recommended? I’m wanting to keep the price low as possible. Another reason for upgrade is to try n lower power bill (currently using 1st gen 980X)

I have 3 machines I upgraded. Went from Asus P6T with i7-920 (2 machines) and i7-950 (1 machine) to Asus P8Z77 with i7-3770. I think they are about 33% to 40% faster than the old machines. So far all been good. Still need to swap out GPU in one to try and reduce the power bill.

This doesn't relate directly to your question (and I'm not even sure if it's appropriate for Number Crunching) but I had an idea a few weeks ago while reading some posts in NC.

Why don't the UPS manufacturers get together with the computer power supply makers and output the computer's various requirements directly from the UPS? I'm not an electrical engineer, but I'm sure quite a bit of efficiency could be gained from not inverting the battery power to 110VAC and then rectifying it again to get what the computer needs. It would also remove a major source of heat from the computer case.

The UPS would still have to invert 110VAC for the monitor and whatever other peripherals the user chooses to plug into it (I run my U-Verse modem/router off my UPS, and also the radios for my radioreference.com feed), but the computer is always by far the biggest power consumer in a complete setup and would provide the biggest efficiency gain from this idea. And maybe they could also offer some 3/5/6/9/12 VDC outputs that could power some peripherals, such as modems and routers, which usually have external power supplies.

In business terms, computer makers could lower sticker prices by leaving out the power supply, and then charge more than the actual difference for the "upgrade" to a version with it. Also, it would get a whole lot of people to buy a new UPS even if their old one is still adequate (or they're savvy enough to just replace the batteries when needed).

I see 2 issues with the Maximus V GENE MB:
Its PCIe slots share the PCI lanes, so if you put 2 GPUs they will work at x8 each, and the slots are too close each other wich will make it hard to cool the GPUs... Other than that Asus MBs are really good...

If it were me I would try to get a P8Z77V Premium... http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77V_PREMIUM/
it has 4 PCIe, and you can use up to 2 at 16x and those are far enough to give better cooling to the GPUs... Not sure about the differences on prices, but i dont think they will be too high...

Eighteen months ago, I've build a Sandy Bridge (I7-2600)system with 2 HD5870
GPUs, using an INTEL DP67BG Mobo; 8GByte DDR3-1648 MHz (OCed), 1000Watt
modular Coolermaster PSU. 1 500GByte SAMSUNG BOOT drive and 3 1 TByte SAMSUNG
drives and a 1.5TByte SEAGATE USB 3.0 Back-Up drive.
Since the Multiplier is locked @ 34(low) and 38(turbo), I INcreased
the base-clock from 100MHz to 104MHz. making this system more stable.
(This doen't effect PCIe bus-speed!)


Also still have 2 systems with identical mobos (ASUS P5E), 1 with an QX9650
CPU(@3.6GHz)+GTX480 and a Q6600(@2.66GHz)+GTX470. PSUs Coolermaster 650Watt.
Running over 5 years, but still with a fairly high effeciency, so hard
to replace,(;^)) both running WIN XP, 1 64bit, 1 32 bit.

I'd choose an ASUS mobo, with atleast 2x PCIe 2.0/3.0 x16 and 1 PCIe 2.0/3.0
x16 or x8.
CPU= I7-3770(K) or 3630 or 3660, and since I've a SB withAMD/ATI (2x 5870GPUs)
this one gets 2 or 3 NVidia 580/680/690 GPUs and 1 1500Watt PSU and a
better CPU cooler.

Running PrimeGrid on i7-2600 managed to push the CPU over it's thermal-limit,
CPU =/> 95C and shut down, not a good 'mix' with SETI/Einstein/LHC/Docking
and C.C.


Other 2 systems are also running multiple Projects, like SETI/SETI-Bêta/
Einstein/GPUgrid/Rosetta/CPDN/LHC.

Finding the "Right Mix" isn't as easy as it looks, GPU only projects have
a higher througput, also a low Resource 75%/50% share, compaired to
SETI (400%), Einstein (100%) is necessary to ensure both GPUs and CPUs
have always work.


I'm tempted to try an AMD BULDOZER, cheaper compaired to i7-3630/60
and i7-3770(K).
Most important are mobo*, Memory, type and speed, CPU, case+cooling method
and PSU(s).
*SATA 3(Plus SSD BOOT-drive); USB 2.0/3.0; 3 PCIe 2.0/3.0 x16 busses.

I'm likely to spend more time on finding a 'best combination' and as far as
the mobo* goes, enough(3)PCIe slots, no internal sound/ethernet/WLAN & BlueTooth, as I like those as PCIe (2.0)1x slots. (And a PCI-slot for a diagnostic-card).

*Isn't always possible and/or available...

The 3 hosts, now in use produce about ~100K a day and use ~1000Watt/hour* together, which is fairly effective, IMHO.......
* AC is OFF, (1200Watt when ON).

If €/$, wasn't an object, I'd be building 2 Ivy Bridge and 1 8 core Bulldozer,
system, each with minimal 2 AMD/ATI or NVidia High End GPUs. . . ;-)

I swapped out the GTX570 with GTX670 in 2 of them before I did the motherboard upgrade. I did plug a power meter into one of the old machines after the GPU upgrade but before mobo. It peaked at 320w before upgrade and after I saw a 300w peak, although would have been better if I took samples over a longer period (only had 1 day before and 1 after).

The GTX560Ti that I have in one of them will probably get swapped out for a GTX660 (rated at 140w peak) and should still give a performance boost from the 560Ti.

Very well said and if 'they' did, a PSU is easily made for a "Double Function",
or double INput voltage and a switch/relais to switch from 110/120/230/240Volt
and 12 or 24V DC from a battery.
But everything not only has a (cost-)price, a manufacturer, a whole seller and shop(keeper) has to make (about) 30% gain on their investment.
Otherwise, it isn't considered worthwhile making and producing it.

Throughout all of Europe, you'll see small businesses go bankrupt, only the
biggest appear to survive and even tell their suppliers to stop paying
more or go to someone who can deliver 'at their price'.

As I said, while the market for power supplies would drop, they could get away with charging higher prices for the ones they do sell. And UPS makers would sell a whole lot of new units to people who don't actually need them, and at higher prices too.

I suppose someone would have to crunch the numbers to see if it would come out to a net gain.

In systems where it is not viable to use AC power they make DC computer supplies. Like this http://www.powerstream.com/DC_PC.htm

Moving the power supply inside a UPS would be just that. Moving it.

I'll chime in on the case too.

If you want a case that will take just about anything you care to throw into it (oversized motherboards, plenty of water cooling plus 4 dual slot or 8 single slot video cards) that won't cost you an arm or leg then I'd suggest the CoolerMaster HAF X (it also comes with castors to make moving it easy).

I bought 1 of these a few months back for my triple v/c setup and was so impressed with it that I bought a second 1 for my dual v/c system. The case is quite while supplying plenty of air to keep the internals cool, in fact the noisiest thing about those 2 systems is the video cards.

Thanks for ideas on cases Wiggo & Michael. I would more than likely go with the CoolerMaster CM Storm Trooper Gaming Case (SGC-5000-KKN1-AU) case when I decide to build.

Thanks for ideas on cases Wiggo & Michael. I would more than likely go with the CoolerMaster CM Storm Trooper Gaming Case (SGC-5000-KKN1-AU) case when I decide to build.


Running 5 CM Storm Snipers here. Heaps of room and cooling. Took side fan off and added a 140mm fan on the bottom of the case. It has room for a fan or radiator on the bottom. Using 750w Seasonic modular power supplies in all of them.
