Scotch whisky is spelt without an e, American and Irish whiskeys are spelt with an e. Actually not quite as simple as that! The spelling whisky (plural: whiskies) is generally used in Canada, Japan, Scotland, and Wales, while whiskey (plural: whiskeys) is more common in Ireland and the United States. The usage is not always consistent – for example, some prominent American brands, such as George Dickel, Maker's Mark, and Old Forester (which are all made by different companies), use the 'whisky' spelling on their labels, and the US legal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits document also uses the 'whisky' spelling. "Scotch" is the internationally recognized term for "Scotch whisky". It is rarely used in Scotland, where the drink is called simply "whisky". |

By the way, single malts are also made in Canada and the US. After a lengthy legal battle, they are allowed to be called single malts - at least in Canada. The term "rye" used to be reserved for whiskey made only from rye grain, but usually refers today to a blend of rye and other grains and even corn. From memory, there is a small whiskey distillery in Alberta that still makes 100 % rye. Buck for buck, I don't think you can beat this rye blend if that is the style you like. Two observations: One, it is all a matter of taste which whiskey you like or don't like. Two, after about the fifth or sixth glass I can't tell the difference anyway. Special note to the mods: all this whiskey discussion is clearly related to the original topic. The technical term for the low to mid alcohol liquid produced by the primary fermentation of the grain, before being distilled, is "brewer's beer". So there. |

Indeed, Vat 69 is a blended Scotch whisky. Never heard of it before though. I didn't know it came in beer form but I seen a movie once that this one guy was hung up on it during WWII and it was whisky. |
