Mark,
I hope that whenever you hear tell of someone being alive as the result of one of your fire trucks doing its job you hold your head up with pride, and beat that drum loud.
As you say every crimp, every nut, every rivet, every drop of adhesive used in a modern rescue vehicle is there to do a job - and do it properly.

(The same goes for all who work in the production of emergency rescue vehicles around the world)

I do hold that pride.

If, for some reason, I cannot do the job correctly, I do not do it, and ask questions later.

That is the way I work.

Full custom fire truck?

Everything from the paint on the frame to the tyres.

You can call out every nut and bolt, and specify how it is tightened.

I am serious about this......deal with it everyday.

You want what mounted where?
It won't fit there, Sir.

OK, here?

We can do that.

I never envisioned myself doing this 20 years ago.
Never.

I am happy God redirected me.

We build these things so others might live another day.
I go to work wondering every day if this truck I touch might save a life some day.

That's what I do.

Los Angeles California just received two super scooper aircraft to use against brush fires and there's an DC10 on standby, of course I don't know if the 747 will be used for firefighting again...

We call them Canadair in Italy and they are widely used.

All firemen are heroes.
Every single one.

Their best days are when they are not pressed into service.

But, they stand by, every single hour of every single day 24/7/365.
And a very high number of them are volunteers.

They do what they do because they believe in the greater good that comes in the rare moments that they have to take action.

And me? I just take great satisfaction in that I can help build the trucks that allow them to fulfill their goal and save a life or two along the way.

Works for me, kids. Works for me just fine.

Not everyone can say that their day's work might have saved a life.
I know that somewhere along my last 7 years of building fire trucks, somewhere, I have made that deciding moment in somebody's life.

That, my friends, is true gratification.

There is a new Fire house going up 2 blocks from my house. I was just wondering if Mark is going to do an inspection on the new Engine headed there.

The engine is Americal La France.

Finally got a chance to talk to some of the Paramedics/Firemen at the station. It appears that station 4 split and 5 got the engine while 4 kept the ladder.

[edit}

I also saw them make one of the shortest runs in history. The firehouse is about 300 yards from a busy intersection. I saw the entire run while waiting for the light. They pulled onto the road in front of me (yes, I had stopped short of their driveway) and stopped just short of the intersection...
