That's a really good question. I guess in the meantime probably just my own personal amusement.

The main goal was to have a way to make custom parts for myself for various electronic and computer based projects.

The next time I plan on making something ugly out of duct-tape and cable ties, the wifey will be happy to see me neaten it up with a custom case/mount/part whatever.

I guess I just wanted to expand what kind of things I could work on in my own shop. For now I'll just print hordes of little Androids, and take over the world.

In the future, I could make it profitable by making models for people, or even parts that aren't mass produced/hard to find. I plan on buying some glow-in-the-dark material, and using it to produce some ebay rasberry pi cases in a currently unoffered 'color'.

I will need a second, and probably third unit if I wanted to produce small goods at a volume for sale.

Note on materials. These printers use (typically) ABS filament and PLA filament. I'm sticking with the PLA for now, as it's totally non-toxic and 100% biodegradable.

Maybe you could make plastic pet rocks? Hey you never now what the next fad will be:)

Edit- Glow in the dark plastice pet rocks.

The windows phone people. LOL, supporting open source. (Well maybe; there are commercial brand desktop 3d printers)

Phone cases are getting common in the 3D printing community however.

Rather than take the main Linux thread off in a tangent & seeing as this is the C & T thread, a Linux question which is causing problems.

Since installing Mint 13 & now Mint 14, I could not get them to access my network even though it could see all on the network. All relevant apps installed.

However, since both are running via VMware, powered them off & edited config - changed from NAT to Bridged Network & no problems arose which up until now was good enough for me (no hard drives/rigs spare to physically install Linux atm).

Had a close friend call on me yesterday wanting to turn his old desktop into a media centre for his disabled wife (the guy is pretty IT savvy).

Attempted to install Mint 14 but it would not install (thought that maybe the specs not up to scratch?) so installed Mint 13 & successfully.

He's come back to me today feeling very frustated as all the necessary packages have been installed & even though Mint can see all on the net, Windows cannot access the media files on the Mint rig.

Reconfigured my Mint VM's to NAT & I got the same issues with both 13 & 14.

Anyone have any idea as to why Windows can see but not access?

VM + NAT?...

The problem may well be the NAT.

If you are running things via a VM, then you need to "bridge" the network connections for things to behave as you would expect on a physical network.

Sorry cannot be more precise for the description you've given.

Good that Linux Mint is working. Shame for your inter-operating confusion. Check how the shares operate?

(I have very many Windows machines running nicely with shares from multiple Linux servers. But then again, they are not on VM systems.)

Good luck,
Martin

Thanks for the reply Martin, however, you should have read my post correctly.

I have no issues as i'm aware that NAT is a problem & currently have mine running via "Bridged Network".

I only returned to NAT to see if I could figure out why the guy's physical installation of 13 is unable to set permissions for the media to be accessed via windows.

I then tried 14 & got the same issue. I did state that I have no spare drives or rigs to physically install Mint on atm, hence my use of VMware.

Also, this is the sticking point as to why I won't do a physical installation on a rig until I resolve this issue.

As for 14, it came up with "cava unable to read smb location" & "unable to mount drive" when attempting to access my own media center (D-Link DNS 320 on its own port on the router).

Returning 14 to "Bridged Network" without any additional configuration by myself & network seen & accessible, so why isn't Mint seeing & accessible on a correctly installed physical installation?

Firewall? NAT? Quirk of working via VM? VM on Windows?!

Sirius I can't help too much here as I struggle with the same issue...

The file browser in Mint struggles to see network shares, unless samba is installed and configured correctly. I haven't had the time nor motivation to make this work...

I get by by cheating, and mounting my windows shares into my linux machines.

mount -t cifs ..........

It's the only way I can get linux mint to see windows shares at the moment. As far as windows seeing the linux mint box? Haven't even tried.

I know my Ubuntu server works fine with samba, in both directions. It's something to do with mint itself. Samba needs to be installed and configured properly, start there Sirius.

Ahh so it's not me!! Just installed Mint 14 on an old XP box and I knew that Ubuntu could see the Win network, but Mint can't. As i have a WHS with all my media on looks like it back to XP. I just don't like Ubuntu.

Ooops, you done it again.

I'll try to explain clearer....

I do not have any issues with Linux Mint running on my systems via VM, except 14 & a slight issue with resolution.

I have installed Mint 13 on a physical machine belonging to a good friend

It is to be used as a media centre for his disabled wife so that she can access media from her Windows 7 laptop.

Windows can see the media/files/drives but cannot access them. To try & resolve the issues I reverted my VM's to NAT which could not see my network so reverted mine back to "Bridged Network"

What can prevent this on a physical Linux machine which seems to have everything installed & set up correctly?

Permissions permissive for the folders that you are sharing? Guest access allowed? Are the files world readable?

Is the firewall running and you need to select to allow access to "smb/cifs" (Windows shares)?

Silly question: Have you got the samba server (Windows shares server) installed and running?

If you do a web search, there's bound to be a walk-through on how to do that somewhere.

Hope that helps,

Good luck,
Martin

From the experiences I had a while back trying to get Windows machines to read files on a Mandriva box, I also tend to think you have a permissions problem.

I found it works 2 ways, not only do you have to get the SAMBA permissions right, you also have to get the permissions of the files/directories right on the Linux box as well. It was a PITA to get set up and things would change every time one of the machines was rebooted.

Thanks guys. Of the suggestions made, I'll look into them for him & see if we can get it working.

Samba is installed & as far as we can see, configured ok.

Going back to my VM's, with the issues seen on the physical installation, I cannot understand as to how the VM's see & access my Windows network as I only installed samba & cannot recall configuring it to any degree.

Message 1345092 - Posted: 10 Mar 2013, 21:34:26 UTC - in response to Message 1344055.

Recap on issue...

We still could not get the mint 13 rig to see the media files copied over from Win 7 laptop. So we wiped drive clean reinstalled which went ok.

Before copying media files, I checked to see that all file permissions were set, then copied them over - It still could not see files.

So made arrangements to add rig to my network. On adding it, checked it out & it showed up on net. Remoted into all my MS rigs & could see all drives/folders/files (only those that are ahared - no C drives).

Copied over some media files to Mint rig - rebooted rig & media drive shows up empty, which is the issue guy is saying s happening to him.

Using Mint 13 rig, attempted to access my share-center, no problem whatsoever & films/tv shows & music all played.

Could this be a Linux/Win permission issue?
