As mentioned over in N/C by Ex (Good idea Dave - think rather than a new board, use politics as it can be a very hot topic), a thread for O/S & Technology discussion. RULES NO flaming, baiting or abuse. No big gun/little gun arguments. Knock the O/S, Technology, NOT the poster. We have had several crunchers assist Windows/Linux users on a terrific basis, let's keep it that way. To start off: - As already mentioned, I agree with the statement that Win 7 wil become XP's successor as Win 8 is a Royal Pig's dinner. It was stated on MS forums that with Win 8 DP & CP, there were several tips available to have the Desktop available from startup. So far, I've tried them all & Win 8 continues to boot up into Metro. So it does look like Microsoft has locked those out. With Linux & the Unity/Gnome 3 debacle, the Linux community has provided alternatives, for example Mint 13, which I'm currently using. This is a good thing, however, the same cannot be said for Microsoft - How long before the Tidal Wave hits Redmond? |

I will say Flat out I love XP. Untill the other day my old P4 has crunched and performed all other computer duties with out fail. Only did a reinstall once in 8 years. And it didnt need it then just wanted to clean all the junk out and do a nice fresh reinstall. I like vista also. Never had any problems running 24/7 since 2009. As Im in the searc for a new computer do they sell win 7 or do you have to buy 8? ![]() Old James |

Yes James, HURRY if you want Win7, because soon the shelves may be stocked with all Win8 machines. And I will +1 your love of XP, for ten years I ran it every day, and it was not a bad OS at all (it's still alive today as a virtual machine living inside of my Linux server). Windows7 is also a pretty rock solid system too. Windows 8 even though I have not used it, I have already heard from several sources about it being a bit buggy. Perhaps it just has stage fright, only time will tell. #resist |

This is just an aside pertaining to the ever-going argument Linux or Windows. I always mention to people I use both. Linux has become my primary OS for several reasons, not because I'm some huge FOSS evangelist, but because I'm a huge tech geek. Here's why I don't like the Linux vs. Windows argument: Why not both? With Linux I can access multiple windows platforms simultaneously. ![]() On the left is a remote desktop connection to WinXP that's running in my Linux server, on the right is Win7 that is running in a virtual box on the same machine that is hosting the linux OS and desktop pictured. #resist |

Better yet, why both? If one does everything you want it to, there is no reason to switch. |

Better yet, why both? If one does everything you want it to, there is no reason to switch. Correct. Unfortunately A certain MS OS will not do all that I need, at least not without spending literally 1000$ or more... ;-) (And I still wouldn't have multiple workspaces) (Oz, for someone who always complains about people that are 'linux evangelists', you are such a Microsoft evangelist it's not even funny, even in the context of using Windows, you're against it being done on Linux?... Hmmm) (This user did not switch to Linux for the heck of it, there's many many reasons I now run Windows only inside of Linux; like you said stick with what works...) #resist |

Moving on. http://www.promotinglinux.com/ is a great satire if you're up for a laugh and don't take it too seriously. #resist |

Will this lead to stagnation or better innovation? As it will go to appeals court, Apple should not get to excited about the fisrt round win. Yes a jury said they had won, But isnt an appeals court just a panel of judges? they might have a different take on it. ![]() Old James |

Will this lead to stagnation or better innovation? And I hope you're right James. I'm more interested in Google's/Motorola's plans to sue Apple. Seems if Apple wanted to let the cat out of the bag, they're bringing this on themselves. But this patent war is definitely history in the making, I don't think there has ever been patent suits between such big companies over such a huge technology (smartphones and devices). This is really going to be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully the cases will get thrown out and everyone will be told to keep innovating and stop waging war on each other. Seems Apple is becoming more evil than Microsoft these days. Some day we may live in the Apple states of America and eat at MACDonalds. #resist |

This was in one of the links a news reporter did when the verdict came out. He said it was like the first guy who built car sued the second guy who built one. I mean a car has 4 wheels and a motor. how much basic can you get. And Id like to see what the patent lwayers say about apple and some of the ideas they might have borrowed. Aslo apple didnt raise to big a fuss when Bill Gates used apples GUI for his first OS. ![]() Old James |

The Volt Driver Information Centre looks very like many of the functions I have on my HP Inkjet printer. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues ![]() ![]() |

Since the jury upheld Apple's patent on the rectangle I think we should send apple our rectangles and ban geometry classes in the math curriculum, |
