My HP laptop seems to go in hibernation mode when I don't type anything for 20 minutes, so I leave it running all night with its BOINC projects running. But I don't know if it does any work at night. Anyway it survived a heat wave which caused me to stop the SUN WS in the afternoons because its fans were screaming. Tullio |

It has 8 processors. What would be a good configuration. 8 CORES AT 100%, 100% of the time, 4 cores 100% etc etc. Just trying to keep it fairly cool for longevity, but at the same time running seti at a good pace. You simply have to try it with 8 cores @100% and watch the temperatures (also of the hard drive, that can get hot on some laptops too if the CPU is @100%), if it gets to hot try 4 cores @100%, that way all physical cores should be still in use, but not pushed that hard. What helps to keep the temperatures down is to lift the laptop a bit in the back, so there is more air under it. As a nice side effect it also brings the keyboard into more ergonomic position. |

Link, thanks for the response. It seems as though I'm on the right track. I just have to keep trying to narrow it down, so that it is running seti as hard as it can without overheating. I do prop it up so that it gets max air circulation. My other laptop I run 4 70 mm fans at it keeps cool, but it's in a differant room that I don't use much so noise fan noise is not an issue. Thinking of running this one on a cooling pad as well, but only let it run seti from the time I go to bed until I wake up. And I was thinking running it 100% that whole period on all cores. |

In your power settings on your laptop (click the battery icon) you have choices as to what the laptop can do when you close the lid. Mine would go to sleep when I closed the cover, so I set it to do nothing when closing the lid, and Seti runs until I open it again. Check your preferances also and see what they say and make adjustments in there. Hopefully it will work for you. :-)> T |

Thinking of running this one on a cooling pad Those cooling pads are just noisy ineffective crap, at least all I've seen so far. Better lift the laptop in the back a little and use some quiet 80mm fan to blow air under it, that's how I do it (on hot days). but only let it run seti from the time I go to bed until I wake up. And I was thinking running it 100% that whole period on all cores. Temperature fluctuations are actually worse than constantly high (not too high) temperature, so unless it's to noisy for you to work with it, I'd not recommend that. so I set it to do nothing when closing the lid, and Seti runs until I open it again. I did that once, when I got back this poor thing was hot like never before, so I'd never do it again, specially if the laptop is crunching. |

ok.....read through this thread....but....how does one configure this to happen? In the prefs it only allows you to deal with % not selecting cores. Does this have to be done in one of the files manually? |

Thanks Claggy, I've got mine set at 6 cores and 75%. It seems to do the trick. Probably going to stay with that. I love my laptop, it's never failed me, and I think this is a good all around config. I could be wrong, but it's working ok. |

Laptop crunchers, remember to clean those vents! Ivan posted a link that's gonna be giving nightmares:) http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=69214&postid=1279380#1279380 |

Going out to get a can of blow off air today. I'm running mid 70's cpu, and 70c on the gpu under 88% load on this i7 rig. Intel says 100c is max,and that is what real temp is saying also. |

People keep mentioning that you can select cores instead of a percentage amount, seen it in a number of threads, including this one. People talk about the start/stop vs the full dedication. |

Link, on 6 cores at 80% my lappy runs in the mid 70's C. So I bought a cooler master laptop pad with a 140 mm single fan with adjustable fan speed. I'm telling ya, if you want to cool a laptop down this one does the trick. I tested it yesterday and with the fan on high (you can;t even hear it) it dropped the temps 14c. The air coming out of the exhaust port is almost cold. I couldn't beleive it. I'm going to run 8 cores at aroun 90% and see wehat happens. Well, they might have got better now. The last time I was searching for them was when my laptop was almost new... and that was 5 or more years ago now that I think of that. At that time these pads were pretty much nothing to have and once I figured out how to undervolt the CPU, I didn't need one anyway or only on hot days. |
