Oh man! When it rains it pours, I guess :( Sorry about your misfortune, James. Does this open the door for upgrades? :D

I will most likely by a new computer. I like the I7's but they are pricey, But the I5's can more than take the place of the old P4 and the mac. The Mac is a intel dual core and the P4 was just one core. So one I5 is one core more. Plus running lunatics would give me a good leg up also.

After an hour of rebooting just to get the P4 running I aborted the 1 AP and 2 MB work units. It was obvious that they would not finish.

That sounds like the death croak of a hard disk...

Well I have decided to rebuild the old P4. Im not going to make it a super cruncher. There will be no GPU card, but it will crunch for 24/7.

Well I have decided to rebuild the old P4. Im not going to make it a super cruncher. There will be no GPU card, but it will crunch for 24/7. I assume you can salvage your DVD/CD unit from the original. That's about it equipment-wise. I'd guess that about a 650W PSU would be sufficient, might even allow for a low end GPU down the road (like a GT430 or similar). EDIT: I always try to over-estimate PSU's. I hate surprises. ____________

I had forgot about the CD and dvd drives. I have a cd burner but just a dvd reader. So I will just upgrade that also.

I'm a big fan of PC Power & Cooling. They have been my #1 choice for well over 10 years now, and have never had a failure with any, and I'm probably on number 15+ now. Can't say enough good things about them. Look for a Silencer Mk II 750w on ebay, they are out there and are fairly affordable (around $100), and should be able to handle anything you eventually throw at it. I like them because they aren't modular. I'm a hard wired kind of guy, more power less resistance. ;-)

Corsair Gold 650W They also come in higher wattages. I have one of these in my twin PSU rig, next to a Corsair Gold 1200W unit. I've never used PCP&C, but I've heard many others speak highly of them. ____________

I had forgot about the CD and dvd drives. I have a cd burner but just a dvd reader. So I will just upgrade that also. Not sure about brands, but if you think that someday you will be using a GPU, then do not use any PSU with less than 650/700 *real* Watts... Of course there are a lot of GPUs out there that dont need so much, but in a few months when the actual mid range GPUs become obsolete you will regret not having enough PSU power to deal with one of those offered at low prices... And also, almost all PSUs have their max efficiency at around half of the nominal max wattage, so using half of your PSU power will mean less electricity wasted as heat... ____________
