How can I put XP on my Win 7 cruncher? I need XP in order to use my film scanner that is only XP and earlier compatible. I have tried virtual XP but it will not work. So I need an XP installation on my win 7 cruncher. I don't know how to do it.

Create a seperate partition abd install XP to that.

On Lancelot, I have Windows 7 on main partition.

I am trialing Windows 8 along with the new Office on a separate 80GB partition.

I also run the latest Ubuntu in a shell in Windows 7.

When the system boots up it says something like

Windows 8
Windows 7
Ubuntu

Choose which.

If the boot sequence times out , it will automatically boot to windows 7.

Many moons ago I used to have a similar setup with Vista , XP , and Ubuntu

I shrink my C partition and created a new NTFS partition.
I put XP on that new volume but now only the XP will boot and not Win 7.
I repaired my boot with Win 7 repair and now I can boot into Win 7 and not XP.
I left XP on the new volume partition.
I goggled and found I have to use BCD to have it so I can boot into Win 7 and XP.
I have downloaded BCD. I wanted to have advice before I complete the BCD procedure.

Win 7 XP Mode

From my first post

How can I put XP on my Win 7 cruncher? I need XP in order to use my film scanner that is only XP and earlier compatible. I have tried virtual XP but it will not work. So I need an XP installation on my win 7 cruncher. I don't know how to do it.

The film scanner does not work in XP mode.
This link helps explain it.
But since it's a virtualized environment, it can't use hardware acceleration (read: "XP Mode is lousy for gaming").

Even though I am trying to use my film scanner and not for gaming.

Beside BCD worked.

I asked how to help.

Sorry Paul, I missed something out on my post. I have a film scanner also for slides & negatives. It worked for me.

That's good and OK but mine I get software and driver errors and I looked up the errors and the solutions does not work either so I guess I will need XP installed. It is a discontinued Visioneer 9320 and I need to digitize film and slides. I use it for my photo art for creative reasons and it won't work with Vista/Win 7. I think it is mostly a software errors or maybe Motherboard chipset drivers errors because ASUS MB disk doesn't work right in XP mode or my Nvida drivers or graphic card audio drivers or something like that all in XP mode.

In XP mode control panel it list under Display adapters as Virtual PC Integration COMPONETS s3 Trio32/64.
Other devices as Virtual PC Integration Device this entry have 3 entries.
Universal Serial Bus controllers have 2 entries as USB Virtualization Hub Driver.

I think this is causing the problems because I have Nvidia 460 cards and the scanner is USB.
The error I get is 1607 isscript and unable to connect to scanner.
I googled the 1607 error and solution are for XP outright and do not fix anything in XP mode.
I googled the unable to connect to scanner and same result as before did not fix anything in XP mode.

So I thought I should install XP and I discovered my problem and I expanded my drive back to normal.
Then I did the BCD and screwed up the XP install by loading the MB drivers instead of the Video drivers first and the MB drivers second after the video drivers install.
So I am on my 3 XP install but out of time I have to go to my dialysis treatment so I will be of no use until tomorrow after I recover from my treatment.

So bye for now.

Sometimes it's just simpler to run a legacy PC for this sort of task. Get an old XP box, set it up "headless" and run it via RDP or VNC.

I know it might not be the solution you want, but it's simple and will work just fine. No need to mess with the win7 box, no need to reboot to use the scanner. Just power up the old box and scanner, connect to them, and scan away.

If your machine is booting into Widows XP, you'll find a c:\boot.ini file that you can add entries to pick which partition to boot. One of my Dual boot files looks like :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Or and even easier (?) way is START/RUN/CMD and enter bootcfg /? for all your options.

By 'BCD' do you mean the command-line tool (BCDEdit)?

It's much easier to use any of these GUI tools:

EasyBCD
http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

DualBootPRO (formerly 'VistaBootPRO')
http://www.dualbootpro.org/

(Both edit the standard options (database) of the Windows 7/Vista boot manager.
They do not add new boot manager.

Windows 7/Vista boot manager executable file is 'bootmgr' or 'Grldr' (hidden files in C:\)
Windows XP boot manager executable file is 'ntldr'

Using the above tools you create entry for XP (which have to point to the partition where 'ntldr' and 'boot.ini' files are (probably also C:\))

(e.g. install and run EasyBCD in Windows 7 or in Windows XP, IIRC one of this programs have also option to repair the boot sector)

After that you will have this boot order:
BIOS - MBR - Boot sector of the Active partition - GRLDR - NTLDR
... so you'll see probably 2 boot menus one after another

(I have Windows 98, XP, Vista on one HDD so I see 2 boot menus if I choose to boot XP)
)

I had an old XP but I had a power outage and it killed my cruncher hard drive and I had to borrow that XP box hard drive and put it in my crunched and now the XP box sits idle not able to run and I ran out of money I had to put full two rear strut assembly and a wheel cylinder and sway bar links for my car it had a harsh ride but is butter smooth now. BCD works just fine.
