I still prefer the old stuff to the new stuff. I'm way more likely to play something like this, then the newest bleeding edge games.

Interesting that this topic is brought up (nostalgic gaming). Michele has had an urge to play Dungeon Keeper as it has given us hours upon hours of escapism game play.

Of course, being an old 16bit/32bit hybrid game, it won't play on Windows 7 64bit, so I had to break out some decent hardware for her to play it on. So I grabbed my recently rebuilt AMD K6-II 550MHz system with 384MB of RAM, ATi XPert 128 16MB video card, running Windows 98 SE system and installed the game.

Watching her play it has made me want to play it too, but another downside to the game is that it runs at such a low resolution, most modern LCDs won't support it (they display "video mode not supported" or "input not supported") and I don't have another legacy system with speakers.

I think I'm going to go up into the attic to see if I have an old set of speakers somewhere...

Sir, for old school gaming, emulation and open source engines are your friend. (Wolf4SDL for example... try running wolfenstein 3d on anything without a proper port....)

"Real Myst", and Riven from GOG (good ol games) are a go in linux as I understand, so I'm good there, but Uru as I only have it on CD is no good, GOG Uru runs in Wine, so I'll be buying Uru soon as I recently re-did Myst AND Riven, and have been itching to re-do Uru.

Heretic
Hexen

Their both based on DOOM...

I just did a test run, after first installing DOS Box, DOS Shell and Heretic, then configuring both Dos Box and Heretic in Dos Shell, Oh VGA graphics and yes sound too, Sound Blaster works...

Ah, just found this: http://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=91, a Dungeon Keeper community patch created by fans and seems to work great on Windows 7 64bit.

Now to see if it can withstand hours of play! :-D

I found the SSI game known as "the Warp Factor" works with the Dos box and Dos Shell, but I have figure out how to play it, Oh and this is the IBM version, not the Apple II version...

I still enjoy 'jet set willy' and 'manic miner'. They were released for the sinclair spectrum, but run on a spectrum simulator on a PC. I am old enough to remember when they were first released and spent many hours playing them then, much of it waiting for the games to load from cassette tapes.

Maybe I'll have to buy myself a set of speakers for one of my other older machines. A cheap $20 set should do nicely for this purpose.

I have bought several old games from them, especially for the purpose of having a good running copy of something. I highly recommend them. And their selection keeps growing.

Another note, many of their games run GREAT in WINE, this is due to them being repackaged in a simple working fashion.

Funny that you mention that site, a co-worker recommended that site to me yesterday when I was telling him about the Dungeon Keeper "patch". I checked it out and I only see a couple games I wouldn't mind playing, but there's nothing like playing the game on some original hardware, and I still own the games I want to play.
