I don't like this at all. Nothing was broken before. I like to see the original OPs post and just read the posts I haven't looked at before. If he read the book on UI design, he would see what he did wrong ... What is needed is a tick box for what device/connection you are reading on, desktop w/ high speed, desktop on dialup, mobile platform ... Or maybe even better have different addresses to come into the forum software that sets appropriate defaults. Of course offer an advanced settings that exposes all the switches so a user can set his experience as he chooses. |

Well I also posted in the latest Technical thread(Jun20), one person responded Mobile users, mobile users, like We(PC/Mac/Linux users) crunch, a lot, what do they do? Their mobiles don't crunch, the batteries won't take it. If they want some sort of switch that would reformat the screen for mobile users vs desktop users, ok, but this utter drek? NO, NO, NO... The way the preference was implemented previously, if you hadn't visited the forums in a week and a particular post had 100 new entries, even if you had the "display only X" set to 35, you would still have to wait for the entire page to load because it would still show all 100 new posts. Yes, I'm aware of the usefulness of the feature. I mentioned the number 35 specifically because that is what I had my preference set to. With this change, people on slow mobile connections can at least change the number to something meaningful and only have to load X many posts per page without having to wait forever. Have you actually tried to browse the forums on your phone? My home internet has been out for two days and it is the only way I have been able to reach the forums. Your suggestion is not a workable solution. |

It isn't about whether the mobile device crunches, it is about forum accessibility from any device. |

I don't like this at all. Nothing was broken before. I like to see the original OPs post and just read the posts I haven't looked at before. In order to accommodate users with intermittent/slow connections adding an option "display threads as pages" or something to that effect would have been a much more elegant solution. As an end user. I get the feeling that things are not about giving users choices or making things easier to use. A direction is selected and they continue on that path no matter what. Sort of "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead". I wonder what the other project admins will think about this change & if it will effect their decision to upgrade their software in the future. My thought is their wanting to bend over and cater to one crowd and don't know how to do this the right way, as You said, so We get the sledge hammer or maybe the Shaft. My phones browser doesn't support tabs either. Which I normally use when reading the forums. I have used my phone to read things before and didn't have any issues, but t-mobile does seems to have good coverage in my area. Also my phone has an actually keyboard so it makes typing quite a lot easier for me. I have Sprint, which is supposed to have good coverage, but I lose connection while sitting in my house all the time. Trying to load nearly any web page is a great exercise in my patience. |

Why is implementing a single change "bending over and catering"? Change is good. The only way to improve things is to make changes to them, whether they're broken or not. Sure, there's better ways to implement and test changes, but come on, it wasn't that big of a deal. |

I liked the way the forum was before, this abomination says the current page with the newest inputs is Page 1, not 162 or whatever... Other forums don't do this, there the 1st page posted to, is the 1st page, not #162 or so... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Other forums don't do a lot of things, and some do more than these forums do. In fact, I like some of the features of other forums that I visit and wish they'd be implemented here, but for various reasons would likely never get added. I'm sure you liked it the way it was before, but there's no reason to over-react to the minimal changes that have been made. Fine, you don't like it. Calling it "drek", an "abomination", or saying that you're getting the "shaft", are all examples of over-reacting. Do you get all bent out of shape when someone moves your coffee cup handle 12 degrees too? |

My personal opinion is that deep quoting (as exhibited by Vic, blank and a few others) is a grade one pain, and should be banned on all forum. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

On My coffee cup, Grace couldn't move it if She tried, I'm ambidextrous, I discovered that in the Army at the Rifle range, I was a qualified marksman, If it moved, all I needed was 1 shot to knock it down, if it was within 600m, from 600-1200m not so much. Just as I figured... you'd give a literal answer to a rhetorical question given to make a point. Whatever. Have fun ranting and raving about it. I should just be glad Mark Sattler isn't here to accuse me of trolling again simply because I see things differently and I try to argue my view. I'll just go back into my corner and shut up now. |

My personal opinion is that deep quoting (as exhibited by Vic, blank and a few others) is a grade one pain, and should be banned on all forum. So post length enforcement? Some forums have that. One option is having a selection for the user to specify n lines per post. With a "click to read more" option. Another option could be a check box for "Don't display quotes in posts" With that I imagine some would want options to not display [code] and [pre] text as well. I personally liked how things were displayed before. So if I was away for a few days and a thread had a lot of posts. I would see them all when I returned. I found that much more user friendly than pages. Which are the norm across most forums I have used. If we have to live with pages then hopefully they will fix the other features which have been broken by this implementation. Such as:
The first page is opened instead of directing the user to the page with the last post since they read the thread.
Selecting click here takes the user to the first page of the thread & once they return to the page with the hidden post it is still hidden.

Just as I figured... you'd give a literal answer to a rhetorical question given to make a point. <sigh> I know who Grace is. I've read plenty of your posts. A rhetorical question can't "not work here" unless the person doesn't understand the point of rhetorical. The question is meant to convey a point. What is mentioned in the question itself is irrelevant. The point of the rhetorical question was to ask if you get upset/mad/irate/irritable about any minor change in your life. Any literal answer to a rhetorical question shows that you don't understand rhetorical, not that the question "doesn't work here". |

I don't have a mobile phone (of any smartness level), but I can understand the issues for those who do. It would have been real nice for Dr. A. (or SOMEBODY) to announce and/or explain the changes BEFORE they were implemented, but we know from experience that that is not how he operates. (SIGH) Before the changes, my Community Preferences were set to Show Newest Thread and Newest Post first, Go to First new post in Thread, and show 75 posts per thread. After the changes, the "Show 75 posts per Thread" became "Show 75 posts per page". I have reduced that setting to 40. All the other settings are unchanged, and seem to work fine. YMMV. Looks like someone is working on things again. At the moment "Jump to first new post" is now broken another way.
The user is directed to the page with the newest post. Not the newest post itself. If there is only 1 page the behavior is the same in that the user is not directed to the newest post either.
