The forms are making me click "next 75 posts" to see what current. I swear I didn't change anything in my settings... Does anyone have an idea what it could be?

Some threads turn over very quickly, and can easily rack up 100 posts a day. Loading ALL the messages in such a thread can be time-consuming on a slow internet connection. The forum software has a function to limit the number of posts loaded.

On your account page, under "Preferences", click on "community preferences"
Under "Message Display" there is a setting for how many messages to display on long threads. I think the default is 75, but you can change it to whatever number you want.

I swear I didn't change anything in my settings...

Me neither.

But the settings have been changed. Formerly, there was a setting like "If there are more than xxx messages, only display the first and the last yyy ones".

That setting has vanished.

Correct. It has changed to how many posts you want to view per page, I think it defaults to 20, and then gives you the option when viewing to go to the next page. It just means that there isn't an option any more to click on show all messages. I believe this was done to make it easier for people with slow machines or those on dial-up, who would be unlikely to alter community settings anyway.

I think that it's quite a good idea, almost any machine should be able to cope with 20 at a time, and how often do we need to go back that far anyway. If we do there is still a search option for a quick find.

Yes, it was a feature request from somebody working (temporarily) on the end of a slow mobile connection.

I think this a just a first rough draft - there is an invitation:

I added a "posts per page" preference,
which replaces the existing preferences.
This is deployed on SETI@home.

I set mine to 1000, but bandwidth isn't a concern. Local cable offers 35mbs down for relatively cheap. But man back in the dial up days I would have set it to 10 :)

It doesn't help much if you have to click through the entire list of posts to get to the end. Features needed. A list of pages at the bottom of the page and a link to go to the first unread post.

I will cast my vote to end this next 75 post stuff. Thats is a down right pain. Worse is you have top back arrow all those pages to get to the cafe page. Should have left it alone.

Strangely, I noticed no difference at all. I have always had mine set at 75, I have newest post at the top and "Jump to first new post in thread automatically" ticked, so until my attention was drawn to the fact I had not noticed.

Indeed. I disapprove of this change. Instead of just seeing a short list of the newest posts. I either have to click through several pages or just have them all be displayed.
It wouldn't be as bad if the "Jump to first new post in thread automatically" wasn't broken in the process of the change I suppose.

I agree. This way the forum is pretty much broken, they introduced pages (which is a good thing, now we should not need any limits for panic and other long threads like it is not necessary in any other "normal" forum), but not all the stuff you need to actually use the pages.

As you, I have the sort order, newest post on top, so there is no difference at all. (Why I should have to wait for all the posts to load when I want the newest first, I could never understand)

So with Jump to first new post does that mean you have to scroll up to read them in order?
I like to read posts chronologically. So reading down the page, as with normal reading, to see the 5 newest post makes sense to me.

Message 1258972 - Posted: 11 Jul 2012, 16:58:13 UTC

Ive liked more the previous way in which I was able to show only the first and some of the latest posts...

Having pages its not a bad option, what is wrong is that there is no direct links to specific pages... Which means now I have to download all the posts in a thread to read the newest ones, as the "next x" button dosnt appear until all the page was downloaded.

I have the posts sorted as older first and with that setting it seems that the "go to the first unread post" dosnt work, (until now It goes allways to the first page...)

Also, going back to some specific forum section was easy using the back buttom of the browser, now you need to go back several times or use the history to jump back, anyway while this is not a big issue as there are links in the thread tittle to go the forum section, it was faster for me in the other way.

I think that if a new feature is needed, the right way is to just add it leaving everything as it was and giving the option to use or not that new feature.

I'm not sure I understand what the fuss is all about. This has been a feature for a while now and I've had mine set to only display the last 35 posts for a few years.

Has something other than that been changed or are people just noticing it now?

If you have it set to display the newest posts last, it always loads the top of thread and then you have to scroll down and hit load the next xxx posts several times for longer threads.

The option to show only some of the last posts is not there anymore, now the threads are paged. That's what changed.
