Message 1262467 - Posted: 20 Jul 2012, 9:05:57 UTC - in response to Message 1262446.

I installed the 304.79 (beta)drivers and so far all looks stable. I guess I'll know in the morning!

I'm sorry I didn't see your other question.

The BIOS updates come from the vendors, if there are any updates.

The update I was talking about that I did is the only GPU BIOS update I've ever done, and I only did it because it was either that or RMA the card.

It fixed it.

Hooray!

PNY doesn't seem to have much in the way of downloadable anything for your 470.

ASUS can help you with a specific problem if you are having it: "1. New VBIOS for reducing the FAN noisy."

So, if you are experiencing excess "FAN noisy" you might look here:

http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/NVIDIA_Series/ENGTX560_Ti_DCII_TOP2DI1GD5/#download

BUT, BUT, BUT, you must be SURE that you are using the right BIOS on the right Part Number. I'm sure you know this already, but for others who may be reading along; if you flash a BIOS to an incompatible version, you almost certainly will turn your expensive video card into a useless paperweight.

If you don't really, really need to do it, don't do it.

It's hard for me to believe that your problem was the drivers, too.

Two computers, two different "versions" of the FERMI cards, two different power supplies, I'm assuming they are plugged into different outlets, different CPUs, different RAM, both having the same problem.

All you've really got are the OS, the driver, the BOINC version, and the applications that are the same. If the driver doesn't fix it, update BOINC. You'll find the recommended version is now 7.0.28 and that 6.10.60 has been fairly universally hated whereas 7.0.28 is hated by fewer people. ;-)

Since you are running x41g, I don't know how in the world the BOINC version could cause your card to downclock, but I'm no expert.

I've got one computer running 6.10.60 and the 304.79 driver that doesn't seem to mind that combination, but it's worth noting that it's running 32-bit XP.

I hope the driver update cured your ills.

If not, I'd be checking the temperatures.

Then, like Horacio said, if it isn't the driver, and it isn't the combination of BOINC version and applications or driver, and it isn't the temperature, it almost has to be the power.

Both the 470 and the overclocked 560Ti are hungry beasts.

No problem with fan noise on the Asus 560Ti and I'm not doing any additional overclocking on it. I am using Afterburner to add a little more fan speed on the 470 and no overclocking on it either. Both systems may have lower power PSUs. I can't recall what they are at the moment. I'll check tomorrow if the honey do list allows. I think I am applying a topping layer to a 12x20 slab if it isn't raining. We had a several hour power outage beginning around 5:30AM today. That really cut into the RAC and probably toasted a few workunits on the 560Ti. The others are on UPS systems. I really hate having to jump up and run around turning off the CPUs and UPSs. The Tesla was still running the 301 driver and it started giving errors related to the graphics driver. I did a clean install of the 275.65 driver on it tonight. It worked fine before and I'll use it until a new one that really works comes out. The Tesla machine has a big PSU. 1200 watts. I don't think there is any problem there.
I watch the temperatures on all the graphics cards pretty closely
I've used Boinc 6.10.60 for a long time with out any problems.
I ran across a post in an overclockers forum that said there was an EVGA BIOS that worked on the PNY 470 but that scares me.
Oh, and the rumor I heard about the downclock was that it was caused by the 301 driver and related to card temperature. It apparently triggers the downclock at too low a temperature. After a reboot to reset it it runs fine untill the next event.
