I am fairly new to this just starting back in June. I have 3 computers working away with it. The one computer I bring back and forth to work with me it seems to have downloaded a few astropulse wu's and they have logged over 80 hours on each, but still show that there are approx 200 hours left. I don't think that the deadlines will be met unless I stop all other tasks on the computer and dedicate the cpu to just to seti 24-7. How do I avoid downloading such large wu's

Look at the percent progress, and do a manual calculation for the duration. I've found this to be a better guess in the early days than the BOINC guess. Things will get better as you do more APs, but it can still be alarming how long they take.

Added to that, BOINC calculates every second whether all tasks in cache will make the deadline. If it finds one or more won't do so, it will try its best to make sure they do, by running them exclusively. And even then it is possible, especially on systems just starting to run BOINC, that it can't do that and that it misses deadlines.

No fear there, though, it will learn from the experience and next time not download as many of these tasks.

How do I avoid downloading such large wu's

If you really don't want APs, set that in Your Account (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/home.php)->SETI@Home preferences (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project), edit them, uncheck AstroPulse v6 (Astropulse v505 are no longer around), save changes to the web site with the 'Update preferences' button.

Next time your BOINC contacts Seti, it'll download those preferences. However, this does not magically let work already downloaded disappear. Work on your computer still has to be done first.

Well, not quite every second.

The calculation is run at every event that can change the situation on its own. New tasks downloaded, suspended tasks/projects, resumed tasks/projects, CPU being allowed, etc. And just in case any were missed, once every 10 minutes.

Maybe not every second, but then twice every minute. Not just every 10 minutes.
When you run with <rr_simulation> on, it'll do a recalc twice every minute:
