These were the forts to protect from the French?

They were insisted upon by the French to prevent the Americans from expanding westward. The Americans were paying the taxes to pay for the forts and the Garissons.

I am going to declare a winner.

OK thanks. Now an easy one.

In relation to cars, most people know that MG stands for Morris Garages, and that BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). But what about Lexus?

Lexus is the premium class of Toyota.

The name Lexus is a word that is intended to indicate the nature of the luxury vehicles.

That is in essence correct Mike. Now if you can give me what Lexus stands for you've won :-)

I thought the Japanese car manufacturers were very careful to pick brand names that didn't mean anything, in any language. A Lexus is only a Lexus, like a Camry is only a Camry.

I am reliably informed that Lexus means something.

OK, I'm gonna call this one in.

Lexus stands for Luxury Export to the US. John McLeod was the nearest with Mike a close second.

pm sent.

There are two car manufacturers names that are almost anagrams of each other (you have to add or subtract one letter). Which two manufacturers?

Add one letter and move one letter to change one car manufacturer into another car manufacturer.

Another hint. They are both Japanese companies.

Mikasa
Mitaka
Mitsui

Those are not the ones I was looking for. And these do not quite fit the clues either.
