Work will be requested automatically by the BOINC client. There's no way to speed it up, you'll just have to be patient (or not dump them all next time you get a false positive).

unfortunately with the help of his tech friend that charged him $250 to tell him that his seti@home project was a virus. I'm betting seti/BOINC is now blocked by his antivirus and won't be able to get any work

So I do have double firewall in & out

(resizing done by me)
Posting in all CAPS is perceived as SHOUTING on the internet. Unless you meant to shout at us, please get your keyboard off Caps Lock next time.

You only need one firewall software, more than one is overkill and it won't stop viruses, malware or spyware from being downloaded by you if you go to certain bad sites, if you click dubious links, if you click "here" to open whatever the pictures are in an email you received, etc. etc.

All you need is:
1. A (preferably) daily updated anti-virus program. There are enough free ones available that are as good as the expensive paid-for ones.
2. One firewall program. Even Windows firewall is enough already. Most internet modems and routers come with a hardware firewall built in, which keeps a lot of bad stuff out already, by just closing ports that aren't used and hiding them from sight (from port-scans).
3. A good anti-malware program such as Superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) or Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/). Then run either once a week (after updating its detection signatures, of course).

The only sure proof way to prevent that your computer gets any strange things, is by unplugging it from the internet and the electrical wall-outlet and storing the computer in a closet.

Otherwise, just wise up and check your computer regularly for bad stuff.

As for not being able to get work from Seti at this time, I think you find we all have that problem. A hiccup with the upload and download servers this weekend. I'm not even sure if all's been fixed already, as I sure can't get any of the work downloaded.

One point that has not been made in this thread is the SETI@Home transmits binary data. Sometimes the data file will trigger a false positive from the virus scanners.
