That is good news. I was actually worried about that, since so many hackers with time on their hands want to destroy data anywhere at anytime. I am starting all over again with the Seti project because of a virus and lost all of my data. Appreciate the info.

With all ya geeks and burnouts commenting, it gave me the insight with all your creative posts to point out an aspect that none of you attempted to point out.

Viruses are made for defective products which were deliberately designed to fail, where the people who designed AV software benefited from suckering in those who generally socially accepted the principal of buying defective software, which required to run bloated software without being allowed to own the AV software and rather having to buy subscriptions to the software such to effectively hold the end-user ransom to use their PC for annual monies owed to the software giants. To further their objectives, the hardware manufacturers endorsed the giants to deliberately re-code the operating system in such a way that all your hardware and software is incompatible every five years which renders your older hardware to the landfill. This pollutes your water supply in hopes for other water giants can sell you bottled water which was packaged near a tailing pond near you.

All in all, it is in the design of things, purely intentional or accidentally exploited to irritate, cost and pollute. I am sure some of us would have enjoyed being able to learn how to do somthing when we were kids, and still be able to use that knowledge, but when things are so-deliberately changed so often, whats the use?

If the aliens are watching us, they better do a good job encrypting their electromagnetic communication systems so we don't discover them and possibly infect them with our backward commercialism ideals.

Besides, we spend money to run this software on our computer in electricity costs, and we don't benefit from it in any way as the people who use our computers hold the discoveries in patent to themselves, to be locked away until they see the best financially viable opportunity to release the technology or decide to educate us. Or that any SETI discovery be censored from public eyes with the deliberately implanted idea that it is dangerous or harmful. hmm.. I am sure you guys can continue from where I left off as I am sure you know where I am going with this one.

The article was extremely interesting (almost as much as this thread) but of course is speculation as, not having made CONTACT, we have no facts as to what any ET is interested in or capable of. But speculation is great in that it gets us to think and look in different directions. Of course the speculation was clearly based on facts we do have here on Earth. But what about that contest that was recently advertised on TV about ordinary people being allowed to broadcast their own messages into space? Could that be like putting a target on our heads?

Sorry, I can't agree with this premise at all. Viruses are nothing more than computer programs that are designed to cause havok on the system for which the virus was written (it is for this reason that the possibility of saving mankind by giving the alien mothership a "cold" a la Independence Day is completely laughable without hundreds of scientists studying the CPU and OS architecture of the target system).

All systems designed by imperfect beings have imperfections in their design. It is up to a good code writer to find those flaws and take advantage of them in code written as a virus. This can happen to any system - not just products that are "deliberately designed to fail".

Not true. There are guidelines in place to give credit to all participants who make the discovery. No one is going to patent any discoveries.

Straw man argument. Who is going to do the shielding? And how long can they keep the facade up? How many people would need to be involved to keep it a secret? The more people that know the secret, the larger the chance that the secret comes out. Very high probability that it won't happen that way at all, but I do note that it is interesting how many people think this way.
