Well, it seems you are having the same problem as I am. I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and Bionc 7.0.28 and now it doesn't work. I noticed that your Bionc log shows 'no GPU' same as mine. When I view the Ubuntu settings it seems to think my PC is a Laptop and there is no Graphics card or driver. I can not figure out how to fix that, however when I run Nvidia-settings, it shows my graphics card, drivers and proper monitor. I suspect that this is the problem, somewhere Ubuntu 12.04 is not in touch with reality. When I ran the new version of Ubuntu in demo mode from the CD it ran perfectly well, but after the install it thinks my PC is a Laptop. I noted others complaining about this in Ubuntu forums, but nobody is offering or has a fix.

Grey wizard was having an issue with his internet connection with Boinc.

If you're running 7.0.28, I assume you did a manual install of Boinc from the website?...(probably the preferred method as of the moment) but:
If you want to try going back one point release to 7.0.27, you can try a repository package, which may satisfy some dependencies or hardware support better.
You can try the Debian Boinc teams release of 7.0.27 by:

first run out your tasks and remove your current install of Boinc, then
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pkg-boinc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boinc

What this does is add a PPA repository to your package sources, which overrides the use of the standard repository version 7.0.24 that is broken.

Ubuntu has made moves towards replacing the broken repository package of Boinc 7.0.24, with Debians working 7.0.27

Precise-proposed repository contains the 7.0.27 from Debian.

If testing goes well, this package should become the standard repository version for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise. It still may be awhile before we see the package moved into the standard repository, but at least it's on its way.

I'm sure many of us would prefer 7.0.28 become the standard repository version, however I am aware of both Debian maintainers and Ubuntu devs having many issues getting 7.0.28 to build on their web-based compilers. So 7.0.27 is the better option when taking that into account.

And as mentioned Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal), has a working 7.0.27 already.

Of course BOINC has moved on to 7.0.31 now that has further fixes.

Arkayn, yes you are very correct. But repositories, (ESPECIALLY Debian flavored), tend to have slightly dated packages.

I would have preferred 7.0.28, but as I mentioned there were in fact some Debian specific compilation issues with that one, however several of us out there are using 7.0.28..

And long story short, there are worlds of differences between 7.0.24 and 7.0.27...

I think it will be some time (if ever) before we see anything beyond 7.0.27 in the standard Ubuntu (12.04 precise) repository.

I'll be continuing to use the alternative PPAs out there to test the newer versions, this will at least help the Debian team with their "Unstable" packages.

And, I'll update when the fix is officially applied to the standard repository. I believe the Ubuntu people are waiting to get confirmation on as many projects as possible...

Ozz, thanks. But no big deal, It was a personal thing. I love Debian, I like Ubuntu, and Boinc obviously means a little to me as well. :-)

Hey guys,

Just to check that I'm having the same problem, I keep getting computation errors after not even running the task for 1 second.
Ubuntu 12.04 and the latest BOINC from the Ubuntu Software Centre.

Here is also a link to all my failed tasks...

Is this something that will be fixed in the new release? Or is there a problem on my pc?

Also, does the GPU processing work in Ubuntu? I have the latest ATI drivers installed for my HD4800's, but it's not picking them up.

Message 1262900 - Posted: 21 Jul 2012, 11:23:42 UTC

I am still using BOINC 6.10.58 on my SuSE Linux 11.1, no following BOINC version will ever start. I am managing 7 BOINC projects with no problem, including one using a Virtual Machine based on Virtual Box (BOINC_VM in Test4Theory@home).
Having recently bought a HP 635 laptop with SLES 11 from SuSE, I tried installing BOINC 7.0.28 on it. No way, two libraries are missing, libssl.so.1.0.0 and libwx_gtk2u-html-2.8.so.0.
Having asked support to www.suseitalia.org, I was led to a repository with those libraries for SLES sp1. The first one refused to install (why?), the second installed as a version more recent than that used by BOINC, that is libwx_gtk2u-html-2.9.so.3.0.0.
So I gave up.

GPU processing unfortunately I cannot help with. I know linux supports CUDA on 64 bit systems, but you are ATI so I'm not sure. I would think if Ubuntu sees your cards, boinc will as well, but I'm sure that's not always the case.

And as far as your errors it does look like you are suffering from the broken package, NOT a system issue.
The 7.0.27 package will fix the instant errors. You do not need to wait for this package to enter the main repository if you do not want. You can use a "PPA" repository to add the sources for 7.0.27

Do this in a terminal line by line:
sudo apt-get remove boinc
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pkg-boinc/ppa
sudo apt-get update

This adds the alternative repository handled by the Ubuntu/Debian Boinc Team.

Then either do
sudo apt-get install boinc

or just use your GUI package manager to do the install (which will be 7.0.27)
