Yep and there isn't a missile on this planet that could catch them, just light up the afterburners and watch'em fall as the nissiles ran out of fuel... No wonder they were armed only with Camera equipment, may as be space craft as they were neigh impossible to shoot down, by anyone, bar none. And Ive heard tell that they were the last aircraft to be designed with a slide rule. Dont know if that is true or not.
Old James |

And Ive heard tell that they were the last aircraft to be designed with a slide rule. Dont know if that is true or not. Well, slide rules and a few IBM mainframes. Definitely pre-calculator and pre-PC. The outer shape also tells you it was pre-CAD. One of the last pre-CAD US warplanes was the T-38/F-5 series. If you have ever done 3D CAD, or hand lofting, looking at the shape of those airplanes gives you a lot of respect for the people that did them. |

Not to derail the thread, but....... The pun I made was based on a quote from the movie....Apocalypse Now. And the point is, he said "some day this war's gonna end". Did it really ever end, or was it just transported to another land? Smells like...... Death to me....in whatever form you couch the term. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." LOL..... And leak like a sieve. Don't fuel it at night and expect to find anything in the tank in the morning. |

LOL..... Yeah that's what I read, but then I'm not sure carbon fiber can stand the friction at whatever mach number it takes to outrun a telephone pole on steroids that wants to get too friendly. ;) The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

last weeks episode of great planes did it on the SR 71. The pilot they intervied said it is the only airplane that can use afterburners continuiosly. Aslo at full speed they get better fuel milage. It was proved during some high speed evasive manuvers from sams. He also stated that after take off they would crank it up to heat the aircraft up and shrink the skin, then do a areial refuel. After a mission the canopy would be 350 degrres F. That is my favorite looking airplane.
Old James |

If it wasn't for the pilots flight suit, He'd/She'd be toast after being in that flying oven, still for an older generation aircraft it did pretty good, talk about yer hotrod...
