Voyager is approaching solar system's outer limit

Most astronomers set the outer edge of the solar system at the far edge of the Oort cloud which, by some estimates, is over a light-year out. It will be many, many thousands of years before they exit the solar system.

Just another example of journalistic hyperbole.

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.

Agreed Kenzie, agreed. But what they have done so far is awesome nevertheless.

NASA's Voyager 1 Explores Final Frontier of Our 'Solar Bubble'

PASADENA, Calif. -- Data from Voyager 1, now more than 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers) from the sun, suggest the spacecraft is closer to becoming the first human-made object to reach interstellar space.

We have to wait a few months though for real news. Meanwhile both probes have sufficient power in their plutonium "batteries" to keep working into the next decade.

Lynn, the Jury is sill out until further data can be got.

But it must be very close to the boundary .....

Should have went to NASA, in the first place.

NASA Voyager Statement about Competing Models to Explain Recent Spacecraft Data

A newly published paper argues that NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has already entered interstellar space. The model described in the paper is new and different from other models used so far to explain the data the spacecraft has been sending back from more than 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers) away from our sun.

Scientists are not sure exactly how far the Voyager spacecraft must travel in order to reach interstellar space, but they say that there will be three signs, including the disappearance of charged particles, cosmic rays zooming in and a change in the direction of the magnetic field. So far, Voyager 1 has reported two of the three changes: charged particles disappearing as they zoom out and cosmic rays from far away zooming in. Now, they anticipate the switch in the magnetic field, which would indicate the presence of the interstellar magnetic field.

Good luck to both of them :-))

Fun with scaling factors:

If the sun was the size of a 1cm marble, Earth would be 1m away, Neptune would be 30m away, Voyager 1 would be 128m away, and Alpha Centuri would be 300km away.
