If you look to the "food pyramid" it is the same formula the USDA has to fatten cattle. How many artificial growth hormones are you ingesting through meat and dairy products? How much hydrogenated oil are you consuming? These are rampant in fat and slow food that is prepared for you. If you want something half way healthy you need to head to your kitchen. Chances are there is a device there called a "stove". Probably somewhere near your microwave. Use it, and be careful what you put on it. Make sure it is edible to begin with. Janice |

... However, I have noticed a lot more overweight/obese people out there lately. My last trip to Olive Garden was filled with people who could only be considered obese by any standard (not the new BMI). It's really scary to see how many people look to have difficulty in just moving around. As for running up stairs... Three steps, gasp, 'stop for breath', and a pool of sweat... Is that why we have so many lifts/elevators and escalators that are festooned with advertisements for "fast food"? However, I have noticed a lot more overweight/obese people out there lately. My last trip to Olive Garden was filled with people who could only be considered obese by any standard (not the new BMI). Last time I was at a local mom's cooking restaurant I saw a table full that were of a size they couldn't have fit in a booth. All had canes to help them walk. Two appetizers for the table of 4, full dinners, sodas w/ refills, and desert. And I can diss now. I was one. Not anymore. Lost a pile. So it is possible. And I still eat some fast food. It is all about serving size, portion control. If you forced me to pick one or two items, diet soda and high salt flavored chips, would be my targets. |

According to my online BMI, I am considered obese. Most would say I'm a little overweight. I finally tossed my Pepsi habit and replaced it with Countrytime Lemonade. I still struggle with portion sizes whenever Michele makes a good meal. |

The thing that makes me very sad is obese children. A four year old the size of an eight year old screeming he want's chocolate and probably getting it. Looking into the parents shopping card and seeing chip, soda, but no veggies or fruit. I have never been a size 0. The best I have ever achived was a size 10, now I am a size 12. Based on my height 5'9" I could loose a pound/kilo or too, but I am not obese. Once in awhile I crave a Big Mac and /or some french fries, but I could live without them. Now a good pizza or a coleslaw at KFC is another story, but in moderation will not hurt my weight. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Betreger, that can't be true, if you don't believe the free market is always good for you, you must be a socialist. Does that include full legalization of all recreational drugs? Just checking because I'm new here and don't know where you each stand on what issue. Thanks in advance. |

When I was in the Air Force, They had started that BMI program. We had one guy who was a weight lifter. He was 5'8" and was 220 lbs. according to the Air Force he was fat. He had to get a medical waiver just so he could stay in the service. We all wonderd why some idiot just couldnt look at him and use common sense to tell he wasnt fat. The guy had the build of the hulk. [/quote] Old James |

My BMI is 21 which is in the lower area of normally acceptable. Yet everyone says I'm as skinny as a rake ..... Hummmmmm from my computer dictionary BMI: A measure of someone's weight in relation to height; to calculate one's BMI, multiply one's weight in pounds and divide that by the square of one's height in inches; overweight is a BMI greater than 25; obese is a BMI greater than 30 BMI is a very rough tool. It fails fairly often. IIRC there is a much better tool available but you need a tub of water. To measure the proportion of fat you weigh the person then you put them in water and see how much water they displace when they float. Fat weighs less than muscle and a ratio is calculated. Can't find a link to this right now. |
