Not sure if this one is better placed for the Cafe...! :-(

What caused the obesity crisis in the West?

... one thing that has changed is the food we eat, and, more specifically, the sheer amount of sugar we ingest. ...

... a highly sweet by-product of waste corn, was also incredibly cheap. It began being used in every conceivable food - pizzas, coleslaw, meat. It provided a "just baked" sheen on bread and cakes.

By the mid 1980s, corn syrup had replaced sugar in fizzy soft drinks...

... when the liver is overloaded with sugars, leptin simply stops working, and as a result the body doesn't know when it's full.

"It makes your brain think you're starving and now what you have is a vicious cycle of consumption, disease and addiction. Which explains what has happened the world over,"...

Addictively sweeter than refined sugar... All far far from sweet...

Since my days at Kitchen Range, I have never eaten in a fast food outlet. I know what goes into the food.

Do you know which foods are genetically engineered to grow larger or sweeter?
Few if any have been engineered to give better nutrition. Larger/sweeter/faster/more seem to be the criteria.

Do you know which meat product has been genetically modified and which has been fed growth hormones, also a very large potential contamination problem?

Do you know how much cow anus is put into your burgers via "Lean Finely Textured beef"?

The problem is ALL commercial food has become junk food.

Is there really an "obesity crisis" ?

I think part of the problem is they have moved the goal posts. It used to be the pecking order was skinny, normal, chubby, fat and then obese. The term "obese" was reserved for those who were grossly overweight say greater than 18 stone (approx 250lb or 115kg's).

However these days the term "obese" is used for anyone mildly overweight.

We are told that one in four people are obese. It's funny but I don't see this when I walk down the street. There is the same range of body sizes there always was. Obesity Crisis my *rse, even in MacDonalds I don't see many obese people

Someone, somewhere is telling "porkies" and beating this up into an issue to avoid discussion on a much more serious one.

but but but the commercials from the makers of high fructose corn syrup tell us there is no difference in their sugar than real sugar.

BTW high fructose corn syrup isn't a naturally occurring substance. Since it isn't why isn't it called an artificial sweetner?

I think this product falls in line with other non natural substances like partially hydrogenated oils. Our bodies don't react correctly to them because they are not naturally occurring substances.

Naw, there's a better diet than that...it's called the...

S.A.M.S Diet....

Eat what you want, when you want (but don't make a pig of it)

For short journeys...WALK

1 hour after each main meal, talk a short walk

If travelling to work by bus, get off a stop back & walk the rest of the way

Whenever you find something funny (within reason of course & always depending on where you are), laugh it's good for you.

With the exceptions of medical reasons, most obesity is down to laziness, simple as that.

Yep. What Sirius said. And what Guy said (minus the sarcasm and anti-dem political undertones).

Eat less.

Exercise more.

As far as what classifies as overweight and obese, I do agree those terms are used unfairly.
Technically I'm overweight, but that's a joke IMO. I'm 6'1, I've always had a large frame, and I weigh 210, give or take 10-15lbs. I "should" weigh 185lbs according to my doc... I haven't weighed that since I was a teenager and almost too skinny. So the terms overweight and obese are kind-of skewed these days it seems. What women put up with is also unfair. Nobody is a freaking 0 unless they are unhealthy looking twigs. gross.

The "Obesity epidemic" is simply the result of our relatively cushy lifestyles.

The healthiness of our food supply, that's a whole 'nother issue.

That's it! Pink Slime is too healthy. It doesn't cause enough dysentery and diarrhea to get people skinny!

Ummm real Maple syrup is boiled down maple sap. No additives. No chemicals altering it structure. basically, you taste maple tree and table sugar(Sucrose)

The same cannot be said for High Fructose Corn Syrup.

What caused the obesity crisis in the West?

They start you off at a young age with something called a "Happy Meal" and go from there.

Betreger, that can't be true, if you don't believe the free market is always good for you, you must be a socialist.
