Finally built a 4th box destined for the S.O., this one. Worked great too...

... for 4 hours. Then the motherboard fried. Great. Still waiting for UPS to pick it up for warranty RMA. Hope the replacement arrives in time.

My apologies for any missed credit.

My apologies for any missed credit.

The only missed credit is your own but some others may have to wait a bit longer for their's. :)

I just hope that they arn't matched up to any of mine waiting for a conclusive result before they're errored out of the system because I've been teamed up lately with some totally dodgy setups lately that are pushing resends. ;)

Cheers.

I got the new board... and the CPU had been fried. I then did another RMA and replaced the CPU.

I finally got it all hooked up, it booted like a charm. Five minutes later the replacement board (and possibly the replacement CPU... can't tell) fried and I'm back to square zero. So it comes down to the PSU or CPU fan being bad. As I didn't buy them from the same place I got the rest of the system, now I'm looking forward to support hell of trying to convince them to give me my money back, and trying to convince the other place to RMA again when with the same failure on new parts it definitely indicates they aren't and weren't ever the problem.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I wish you good luck. RMA's are not fun.

Hope you get it in order quickly and painlessly.

Quick and painless is not my specialty, unfortunately. :^)

Second motherboard blew, in this machine one day after I'd finally sent off the first one. So now I'm down two machines. More apologies.

Sigh...

My wife thanks you for the 'wingmen/wingwomen' reference.

Heh... that's cute. Thanks. Seems to be catching on as I see "wingpeoples" on the first page thread title.

Well I finally got it running... er... the first failed box, the 8-core with the GTX 460. The good one! If it failed this time, it would have had to go back to the store (4 months after buying it.)

But, I ended up being vindicated and the problem was a bad (brand new) power supply frying the motherboard and CPU. I'd steer clear of the Thermaltake 650W (and possibly the 750W is no better.)

If didn't find this rather difficult-to-isolate cause, I think I would have completely lost confidence. :^p

It died again. Thankfully I only put 2 or 3 days of cache on it fearing it might.

I pleaded my case and got a refund on the board and CPU. I won't buy another MSI board again, or another Thermaltake PSU. :^p

Off to dump some more $ for a Gigabyte board this time and mail off the dead tech. for my refund.
